現代語訳
生け捕りしました三度の大地震
大工
「ええ、もし、旦那、この手合いの悪い所は、とくと言い聞かせやして、ともかくお詫びをいたしましょうから、まあともかくも私たちにお預けなさってくださいまし。実のこと私たちは仕事始めでしょうまで、日に一分取って好きな材木をたらふく削りやすのも、この主人のおかげでございますから、身に代えてもこのお詫びをいたさなければなりませんのを、かしら。」
鳶の者
「そうさそうさ、お前の言う通り、こんなことでもなくっちゃあ、あの野郎の面を見に行くこともできやせんもし。こりゃあ一番私たちが面を立ててくださいまし。」
沢庵
「あの衆の申しますとおり、変わりがえのうれいを喜ぶのではございませんが、こんなことでもなければ鼻の下が干上がりますのを。屋根屋さん、お前なんぞ、寝そうじゃあねえか。」
屋根屋
「本当に修繕仕事暮らしをしていた日には好きな酒の水が飲めやせん。こちとらがためには、岩食いの地の親と同然でございます。どうぞご勘弁してやってくださいまし。」
医師
「へえへえ、私なんぞも地震様のおかげで五本や六本のお足は朝のうちにも取りますから、地震様への米代の借りも五月たまった店賃もすっかり済ましました。そこらここらもお考えなさって、取り囲んだところはお見逃しくださいまして。なら、ことなかりなくなった十分お使いくださいまし。また銭も借り怪我もできますから、と手前勝手をなんとたてて。」
※詫び事をするにつけても、地震の神も心におかしく笑いを含みけるが、わざと声を荒らげ
「いいや、ならぬ。かかる罪あるやつを許しおきなば、日本六十余州の鯰どもよきことに心得、また再びかように諸人に難儀をさせ、市中を大破壊になさんも計られねば、いごの見せしめになべ焼きの刑に行うべし」と、さらに聞き入れねばざれば、せんせん方なく皆々ため息をつきながら「ゆりせ、まあとうそう」
英語訳

Carpenter:

Pickled radish vendor:
"As those gentlemen say, I don't rejoice in others' misfortune, but without incidents like this, business dries up completely. Roofer, you must be sleepy, aren't you?"
Roofer:
"Truly, when I'm just doing repair work to get by, I can't even afford to drink sake. For us, this is like having a rock-eating earth parent. Please have mercy and forgive us."
Doctor:
"Yes, yes, even someone like me, thanks to the earthquake deity, can earn five or six coins just in the morning.
