つらかったあの人を、初瀬の
山おろしのように
激しく
枯れてしまえとは
祈らなかった
のに

七十四番
この歌の心は、初瀬は山中にあって嵐の激し
い所である。全体の心は「つらかったあの人
を激しく枯れてしまえとは祈らなかった」と
いうことである。「はつせの山おろし」は「川」の枕詞である。
祈っても祈っても人の心は激しく
変わってしまうので、ただ「激しく枯れてしまえとは祈
らなかったのに」と詠んでいる。定家卿は「
近代の和歌にも心が深く
本当に及ぶことのできない
姿である」と評している。

The meaning of this poem is that Hatsuse is located in the mountains where storms are violent. The overall sentiment is "I never prayed for that cruel person to wither away harshly." "Hatsuse no yamaaroshi" (mountain winds of Hatsuse) is a makurakotoba (pillow word) for "river."
No matter how much one prays, people's hearts change violently, so the poet simply says "I never prayed for them to wither away so harshly." Lord Teika commented that this poem has "deep feeling that even modern waka cannot truly match in its excellence."
