発端（ほつたん）
往昔（むかし）漢（かん）の武帝（ぶてい）の時 東方生（とうばうせい）あり博聞（はくふん）強智（けうち）の才（さい）を懐（いたひ）て
僅（わづか）に執戟郎（しつげきらう）となり談笑（だんせう）を事として心を冨貴（ふうき）に累（わづらは）さず
故（ゆへ）に人 以（もつ）て狂（きやう）なりとす東方生（とうばうせい）笑（わらつ）て曰（いわく）古（いにしへ）の人 世（よ）を深山蒿盧（しんざんこうろ）

発端
昔、漢の武帝の時代に東方朔という人物がいた。博学で聡明な才能を持ちながら、わずかに執戟郎という低い官職に就くのみで、談笑を事とし、心を富貴に煩わされることがなかった。
そのため、人々は彼を狂人だと思っていた。東方朔は笑って言った。「古の人は世を深山幽谷の下に避けたが、我は世を朝廷の金馬門に避けるのだ」として、客難一編を作ってその志を述べた例がある。我が朝の昔、応永の頃、北越の士で小枝慶次郎敏泰という者がいた。学問は経伝百家に及び、歌道や舞踊に長じ、あるときは源氏物語や伊勢物語を講じ、勇略武芸は元来その性の長ずる所であって、勇名は一時に専らであった。しかしながら爵禄や顕栄を意とせず、行いは何物にも拘束されず、高く世を避ける人に類していた。その行事の

Prologue
Long ago, during the time of Emperor Wu of Han, there was a man named Dongfang Shuo. Despite possessing vast learning and brilliant talent, he held only the lowly position of halberd-bearer, made conversation and jest his business, and never let his heart be troubled by wealth and honor.
Therefore, people considered him mad. Dongfang Shuo laughed and said, "The ancients avoided the world beneath deep mountains and secluded valleys, but I avoid the world at the Golden Horse Gate of the imperial court," and he composed a piece called "Reproaching the Guest" to express his aspirations - such is the precedent. In our country's past, around the Ōei era, there was a warrior from Hokuetsu named Saeda Keijirō Toshiyasu. His learning extended to the classics and various schools of thought, he excelled in poetry and dance, sometimes lectured on the Tales of Genji and Ise, and his courage, strategy, and martial arts were naturally his forte, making his reputation for valor supreme at the time.
