業によりて飄たる形あるハたるゝにあらす
下品とするハ非なる大輪たりとも絖地の
平咲にて業無ハ上花とハなしかたし普
通の花ハ開花の翌日満開して其業を現し
三日に至委めり是乱れやすきかゆえ也絶品に
いたりてハ開花の翌日いまた半開にして三日を経て
漸満開し其業をあらわし保事四五日にして
萎めり且亦業と云ハ狂咲爪折杷よれ狂ひ抔
なれとも其中に優劣あれとも悉毫に正とし
かたし余の上花と称し親愛せるハ淑縬縮緬
地にして葩厚く丸にして幅広く重りて
十分に勢ひある大輪の佳色両全したるを称
せり然れ共元来花の宗近迚筌定する
ものゝ規測もなくたゝ予か好所に迷淫して
その形を具頁せる事なれハ何れを是
いつれを非ともなしかたし今其優劣を論
すれとも敢て既花者流の模範とすへしと
云にハあらす予か優なるものと私意に
筌定して親愛せるのミ其篤きによりけん
寒露霜降時気の粛殺せるに向ひ野草

技巧によって飄然とした形があるのは垂れるのではなく、
下品とするのは間違いである。大輪であっても絹地の
平咲きで技巧がなければ上花とはしがたい。普
通の花は開花の翌日に満開して其の技巧を現し、
三日で萎んでしまう。これは乱れやすいからである。絶品に
至っては開花の翌日はまだ半開で、三日を経て
ようやく満開し其の技巧を現し、四五日保って
萎む。また技巧というのは狂い咲き、爪折れ、杷よれ、狂いなど
であるけれども、その中に優劣があるとはいえ、すべて詳細に正しく判定し
がたい。私が上花と称して親愛するのは、縮緬地のような
地質で花弁が厚く丸くして幅広く重なって
十分に勢いのある大輪で美色を兼ね備えたものを称する
のである。しかしながら元来花の宗旨といっても確定する
ものの規準もなく、ただ私の好みに迷って
その形を図示した事なので、どれが正しく
どれが間違っているとも判定しがたい。今その優劣を論じる
けれども、あえて既存の花愛好家の模範とすべしと
言うのではなく、私が優れているものと私見で
確定して親愛するのみである。その愛情の篤さによってであろうか、

The elegant forms achieved through technique are not drooping,
and it is wrong to consider them vulgar. Even large flowers, if they are silk-textured
flat blooms without technique, can hardly be called superior flowers. Ordinary
flowers reach full bloom the day after opening, displaying their technique,
and wither by the third day. This is because they are prone to disorder. Superb varieties
reach only half-bloom the day after opening, and after three days
gradually reach full bloom, displaying their technique, lasting four to five days before
withering. Moreover, what we call "technique" includes wild blooming, petal breaks, twists, and irregularities,
and though there are gradations of quality among these, it is difficult to judge all details correctly.
What I call superior flowers and cherish are those with crepe-like
texture, thick and round petals that are wide and layered,
fully vigorous large blooms that combine beautiful color—these I designate as such.
However, since there are originally no established
standards for determining the principles of flowers, and I have merely indulged in my preferences
in illustrating these forms, it is difficult to say which are right
and which are wrong. Though I now discuss their relative merits,
I do not presume to say this should serve as a model for existing flower enthusiasts,
but only that I have determined by personal opinion
