比するハ非ならんなれとも折杷と唱ふる花形
往昔なかりしか紫花折杷の業ある小輪の
菊振鼓と号勢州の売者携来りし秋
その花初てひらき実を蒔たるにもあらさるに
其秋諸方の実生園に折杷の花形初て現し
夫より連綿せり迚菊花培養の祖ともて
はやしたる馬龍といへる隠遁の老翁寛政
の度語りしを思ひあわすれハ其花形の
現する時至れるならんかされハ花菖蒲迚も
諸方の実生還に八重千英の花形けんする
ならん且亦三英六英の花形は花菖蒲の本生
ゆへ実生初咲より花形定りけれとも
八重千英に至ては三歳にして花形定りけり
六英以上は葩倍せるゆへ姿いかにも伊達
なれは見所あれとも花位においては三英に
限れりされとも近年珍花出■しねれは
三英六英の花形は目馴たれは眼を驚すに
いたらす三英に立ならふ時は花の位は劣て
候へとも昔よりためしなき花形なれは
八重千英の花形社古今未曾有のきひん
現代語訳
菊花と比較するのは適切ではないかもしれないが、「折杷」と呼ぶ花形は
昔はなかったものか。紫花で折杷の特徴がある小輪の
菊「振鼓」と号する、伊勢国の売り手が携えて来た秋に
その花が初めて開き、実を蒔いたわけでもないのに
その秋、諸方の実生園で折杷の花形が初めて現れ、
それより連綿と続いている。菊花栽培の祖として
もてはやされた馬龍という隠遁の老翁が寛政の
頃に語ったことを思い合わせれば、その花形が
現れる時が至ったのであろうか。そうであれば花菖蒲でも
諸方の実生園で八重千重の花形が現れる
であろう。また三英六英の花形は花菖蒲の本来の性質
ゆえ実生初咲きより花形が定まっているけれども
八重千重に至っては三歳にして花形が定まった。
六英以上は花弁が倍増しているゆえ姿がいかにも華やか
なので見どころがあるけれども、花の格においては三英に
限られる。しかし近年珍花が出現しないので
三英六英の花形は見慣れて眼を驚かすに
至らず、三英と並び立つ時は花の格は劣って
いるけれども、昔より例のない花形なので
八重千重の花形こそ古今未曾有の奇品である。

Although it may not be appropriate to compare with chrysanthemums, did the flower form called "oribako" not exist in ancient times? In the autumn when a seller from Ise Province brought a small-flowered purple chrysanthemum with oribako characteristics called "Shinko," when that flower first bloomed—even though no seeds had been sown—that same autumn the oribako flower form appeared for the first time in seedling gardens everywhere, and it has continued unbroken since then. Recalling what an elderly hermit named Baryū, who was celebrated as the patriarch of chrysanthemum cultivation, told me during the Kansei era, perhaps the time had come for that flower form to manifest. If so, then in hanashōbu as well, the double and multiple-layered flower forms should appear in seedling gardens everywhere. Moreover, since the three-petaled and six-petaled flower forms are the original nature of hanashōbu, their flower forms are determined from the first blooming of seedlings, but for double and multiple-layered forms, the flower form is determined at three years of age. Those with six petals or more have doubled petals, so their appearance is quite gorgeous and worth seeing, but in terms of flower ranking, it is limited to three-petaled forms. However, since rare flowers have not appeared in recent years, the three-petaled and six-petaled flower forms have become familiar to the eye and no longer surprise us. When standing alongside three-petaled forms, though their flower ranking may be inferior, since they are flower forms unprecedented since ancient times, the double and multiple-layered flower forms are truly unprecedented rare varieties of all ages.
