【Onmyōryō Ritual of Reading the Sacred Invocation】 Curtains are hung all around. With the seating arranged in this manner, the procession files out from the direct-meal hall (naizen naorai-dokoro) of the Onmyōryō (Bureau of Yin-Yang), and first performs two prostrations (perhaps a seated bow). Next, upon being seated, one bow is performed. (During these three sets of double prostrations, the shrine attendants [jinin] announce the Misaki offerings — four varieties each — once on both sides.) Next, the tōne [a shrine official] serving in place of the blue-robed attendant (aozamurai) first rises from the western side, takes the ritual invocation text (saibun) from the offering table, and passes it to the Onmyōji. (At this moment too, one shrine attendant from the western side calls out "Misaki" once as he goes to retrieve it.) The Onmyōji then receives it reverently and reads the invocation aloud. Having finished reading, he returns it by holding it above his head. The preceding blue-robed attendant receives it and places it back on the table. Next, the blue-robed attendant from the eastern side rises, again takes the invocation from the table, and passes it to the Onmyōji. (The Misaki procedure is the same as for the western side; however, on the eastern side there is only one shrine attendant.) The Onmyōji's ritual procedure is then carried out as on the western side. The blue-robed attendant then places it back on the table again (procedure as on the western side). Next, the Onmyōji rises from his seat, faces east and performs two prostrations, then faces west and performs two prostrations, faces north and performs three prostrations, then performs two or three more prostrations. (This is apparently called "the prostrations of the eight directions.") During this time, the blue-robed attendant on the western side takes the wrapped offerings and the aramaki [a type of offering, possibly salted fish wrapped in straw] from the table and throws them into the kagari (torch fire) to burn. The blue-robed attendant on the eastern side follows the same procedure as the western side. Also, sacred rope (shimenawa) is stretched in all four directions, and all the sacred paper offerings (gohei) beside the sakaki branches standing at the four corners are taken and thrown into the fire, where they are completely burned. The Onmyōji then performs two prostrations and withdraws. After this, there are no further ritual procedures. The arrangement of implements on the offering table could not be seen at all, as it was the middle of the night and the distance was too great — though perhaps it was also due to the dimness of one's eyes. With these ritual procedures completed, it was nearly the first quarter of the Hour of the Hare (approximately 6:00 a.m.). 【The Pillar-Raising Ceremony on the Sixteenth Day】 Item: The sixteenth day. Clear skies. [Year of the] Dog-Tiger (?). As the pillar-raising was scheduled for the Hour of the Dragon (approximately 8:00 a.m.) today, carpenters gathered all the timber before the shrine from early in the morning and awaited the appointed time. The general outline of proceedings is as follows. Before the pillar-raising, offerings are presented. After first presenting the morning offerings, the pillar-raising ceremony is performed. [The proceedings of] the pillar-raising...
