思うに、神国（日本）の風俗の美しさは、郷里の子弟にあって、教導を待つことなく、自ら恥を重んじ死を軽んじ、不義を憎むこと仇敵のようである。三歳の孫児でさえ、或いは石に躓いて倒れ、足を傷つけて泣く時、ある人が石を罵ったとする。すると孫児は声を呑み、自ら起き上がり、その傷ついた足を挙げて、その石を三度蹴り、仇を報じたと思う。その気質や習慣はこのような具合である。そして彼らが欽慕するのは、保昌、季武、綱、金時、義...（続く）

Indeed, the beauty of the customs of our divine nation (Japan) lies in the rural youth who, without waiting for instruction, naturally honor shame and treat death lightly, despising injustice as if it were a mortal enemy. Even a three-year-old grandchild, when he stumbles on a stone and falls, injuring his foot and crying—if someone curses the stone on his behalf, the child will swallow his voice, rise up by himself, lift his injured foot, and kick that stone three times, believing he has avenged himself.
