## 山川名勝
熱海の地はもともと山水の美観に富み、近隣にも名勝旧跡が多い。記して浴客の遊覧の便に供しないわけにはいかない。ウォルトン氏は言う、「景色の変化もまた、一二の病気を治す効果がある。例えば、鬱閉症の患者が都市を離れて開けた土地に移り、周囲の緑豊かな山水の幽趣ある景色を広く眺め、ついに快癒するようなものである」と。山川名勝の記録を欠かすことができない理由がここにある。
### 上野山 本町の北、野中の湯のほとりより登る。
『澡泉録』（林祭酒用韜の紀行で前後二録あり、今その前録を抄す）に言う、「細い木こりの道は糸のようで、狐や兎が足跡を交えている。茂った草を押し分けて登る。山頂には古い松が数株並び立ち、その下は平らで座るに足る。眼界は爽やかに開け、右に山を、左に海を望む。村落や田畑はみな一指の先に集まるようだ。まことに眺望豊かな場所であるのに、草むらに委ねたまま、顧みる者がいない。これはそもそも人情として遠いものを尊び、近いものを軽んじるからであろうか。それとも、土地の名声の現れ隠れにもまた定数があるというものか」と。まことにそのとおりである。

禿山で、立木のないものである。険しく登りやすくない。
### 念仏山 和田山に連なり、海に臨んで横たわる。
興禅寺の東、数十歩の村道より登る。登って右に折れると山頂に至る。一望すると、網代・初島が左右に向かい合い、錦巌が屹立して眼下にあり、房総・相武の諸山が遠く雲煙のように出没する。折り返して山を下り、山の尽きるところに至れば、一軒の茅葺き小屋がある。これを魚見岬という。常に一人の漁翁がここにいて、魚の往来を窺い、釣りや漁の便りとする。これもまた絶景である。

## Scenic Mountains and Rivers
The land of Atami is naturally rich in beautiful scenery of mountains and waters, and there are many famous scenic spots and historic sites in the vicinity. It is essential to record them here for the convenience of visitors wishing to sightsee. Mr. Walton says, "Changes of scenery also have the effect of curing one or two ailments. For example, it is like a patient suffering from depression leaving the city and moving to an open place, viewing the tranquil scenery of the green mountains and waters all around, and eventually recovering." This is precisely why a record of scenic mountains and rivers cannot be omitted.
### Uenoyama (上野山) Ascended from near the Nonaka-no-yu hot spring, north of Honchō.
The *Sōsenroku* (a travel record by Hayashi Saishū Yōtō, existing in two volumes, front and back; the front volume is excerpted here) states: "The woodcutter's path is as fine as a thread, with fox and hare tracks crossing one another. Pushing through the thick undergrowth, one climbs upward. At the summit, several ancient pines stand in a row; beneath them the ground is level and suitable for sitting. The view opens up refreshingly, with mountains to the right and the sea to the left. Villages and rice paddies all seem to converge at the tip of one's finger. Truly this is a place of rich vistas, yet it is left to the wilderness with no one taking notice. Is this because human nature tends to esteem the distant and disdain the near? Or is it that the fame or obscurity of a place also has its predestined measure?" Indeed, this is just so.
### Wadayama (和田山) Located to the southwest of Wada Village.
It is a bare hill with no trees standing upon it. It is steep and not easy to climb.
### Nenbutsuyama (念仏山) Connected to Wadayama, lying down facing the sea.
One ascends from the village path a few dozen paces east of Kōzenji Temple. Climbing and turning right brings one to the summit. From a single vantage point, Ajiro and Hatsushima face each other to the left and right; Nishiki-iwa (Brocade Rock) rises sharply below one's eyes; and the mountains of Bōsō and Sōbu appear and disappear in the distant haze like clouds and smoke. Turning back and descending to where the mountain ends, there is a small thatched hut. This is called Uomi-misaki (Fish-watching Cape). There is always an old fisherman here, watching for the movement of fish and using it as a guide for his fishing. This too is a scene of outstanding beauty.
