斯る貧歎無道の世界にも志し有人もあり
佐久郡八郡村と云る柘に吉右衛門といふ有徳
人の潰家有所のもの大勢寄合て倅義

思えば布引も寒さをしのぐ布の下、今は何とか島川原、ここの川村、元山の越し、一重二重と八重原に花は咲けども、山吹の実のない便りに鍋蓋と今の事よ。おや菖蒲池、かく藤沢の世の中に住む塩沢も、鳴く千鳥、野良山達も一様に立ち煙りさえ、細谷にて日向も寒きばかり。鹿や戸倉も開けて、ああ言えばどうということもなく、虎御前と白浪の身の岡となりも、赤沢や、足弱年老いの同じ道、人の雨覆いは仮取りにて、佐久はしたいと振り返りたるには乗らで、梶久保や宇山、月羅屋と過ぎ行けば、芦田も知らぬ我が命、身は古町ぞなかりける。
かかる貧苦・嘆き・無道の世界にも、志のある人もいるものだ。佐久郡八郡村という所に吉右衛門という有徳の人がいたが、その潰れた家に近所の者が大勢寄り合って、倅（せがれ）の義（のため）……

Crossing the hills of Kawamura and Motoyama in this area, one or two layers deep into Yaehara, flowers bloom, yet like the yamabuki flower that bears no fruit, the news is as useless as a pot lid in the present circumstances. Oh, at Shōbu Pond, and so in the world of Fujisawa where one must live, even Shiozawa, the crying plovers, the mountain folk — all alike rise like thin smoke, and even in Hosoya, the sunny side is only cold. Even Shika and Tokura are opened up; saying this and that amounts to nothing. Like Toragōzen amidst the white waves, even the hill by the sea — at Akazawa too, the path is the same for the weak-footed and the aged. People's rain coverings are mere temporary shelters; though longing to return to Saku, not boarding what returns, passing through Kajikubo, Uyama, and Tsukiraya, my life, unknown even at Ashida, found no home in the old town.
Yet even in such a world of poverty, lamentation, and injustice, there are people of good will.
