簡明にまとめることを目指されたのである。間もなく先生は亡くなられ、遺命により公裁(緒方洪庵)がその志を継いだ。 公裁は長崎に赴き、オランダ人と直接交わり、繰り返し疑問を質し、再び原書を取って研究に没頭した。また諸書を参考にし、苦心焦慮して十度も衣服を取り替える間に、原稿を七、八度も書き直した。この春ついに編集を完成し、出版して世に伝えようとして、郵送して序文を請うてきた。私は受け取って読んでみると、文章は流暢で義理は明晰であり、真に積み重ねた力と深い学識、熟練した技能がなければこれほどには至れないものである。 この書の出版により、天下の学者たちに西洋医学の道の本末を知らしめることができ、費用と労力を惜しまず尽くした、真に人命を救い長寿をもたらす学問であって、決して奇を衒い新を競うような流派ではないことが分かるであろう。公裁が師の志を継承し、榛斎先生を死してなお生けるがごとくならしめたその功績は、また偉大ではないだろうか。 公裁の人となりは、深沈で緻密であり、親に事えて孝行で、人と交わって信義厚い。往年、単身で大坂に医院を開き、年齢四十に満たずして、その医術は大いに行われているが、まだ名声は実力に追いついていない。この編が一旦世に出れば、学者たちは必ず弁当を持参し書物を背負って蟻のようにその門に集まることであろう。 昔、香川太仲が『行余医言』を著したとき、後藤艮山が彼に言った。「君の門はこれから多忙になるであろう」と。私もこの編についてそう言いたい。 弘化戊申仲春 坪井信道撰         【落款「坪井□□」「誠軒」か】          鼎斎生方寛書【落款「寛印」】

and present them in a simplified form. Before long, the master passed away, and by his dying command, Kōsai (Ogata Kōan) inherited his aspirations. Kōsai then traveled to Nagasaki, where he directly engaged with Dutch visitors, repeatedly questioning them to resolve doubts, took up the original texts again and devoted himself to their study. He also consulted various other books, and through painstaking effort and anxious contemplation, changing his clothes ten times over, he revised his manuscript seven or eight times. This spring he finally completed the compilation and, intending to publish it and transmit it to the world, sent it by mail requesting a preface. I received and read it, and found the literary style fluent and the principles clear - without genuine accumulated learning, extensive scholarship, and skilled expertise, one could not reach such a level. With the publication of this book, scholars throughout the realm will be able to understand the essence and details of Western medicine, recognizing it as learning that spares no expense or effort in truly saving lives and promoting longevity, and is decidedly not of the type that shows off oddities or competes for novelty. Is not Kōsai's achievement in carrying on his teacher's aspirations, making Master Shinsai live on even in death, truly magnificent? Kōsai's character is profound and meticulous; he serves his parents with filial devotion and maintains faithful relationships with others. Years ago, he established his practice single-handedly in Osaka, and though not yet forty years old, his medical skills are widely practiced, yet his reputation has not caught up with his actual abilities. Once this work is published, scholars will surely come with provisions and carrying their books, gathering at his gate like ants. Long ago, when Kagawa Taichū wrote "Kōyo Igen" (Medical Discourse), Gotō Gonzan said to him, "Your school will be busy from now on." I say the same about this work.
