自享保中始　允読洋書於今百有余年賢豪
輩出、其医書経訳者、不下数十百種、然解体新
書、医範提綱之外、大抵方薬書而、及原生原病
之学者、未曽聞之、豈非由学者、欲速成哉、蓋西
医之道、以明人身内景、為本、原生、原病、次之而
後薬剤、治方従之、譬諸構室内景礎也、原生原
病柱也、薬剤治方楼屋也、今也礎而未柱、遽然
架屋無此理也、我榛斎先生、有見於此、使緒方

病学通論序
享保年間に初めて西洋の書物を読み始めてから今日まで百年余り、賢明な人材が輩出し、医学書で翻訳されたものは数十から百種類を下らない。しかし『解体新書』、『医範提綱』以外は、大抵が処方薬の書物であって、生理学や病理学に及ぶものは、未だかつて聞いたことがない。これは学者が速成を望むことによるものではないだろうか。

そもそも西洋医学の道は、人体の内部構造を明らかにすることを根本とし、生理学、病理学がこれに次ぎ、その後に薬剤と治療法が従う。これを家の建築にたとえれば、内部構造は礎石であり、生理学・病理学は柱であり、薬剤・治療法は楼屋である。今や礎石があるのに柱がなく、にわかに屋根を架けようとするが、このような道理はない。

我が榛斎先生は、このことに着目され、緒方公と青木周弼に病理学書数部を翻訳させ、諸説を折衷して

Preface to General Principles of Pathology

Since the Kyōhō era when we first began reading Western books, over one hundred years have passed to the present day. Talented individuals have emerged in succession, and medical books that have been translated number no less than several dozen to a hundred types. However, apart from "New Book of Anatomy" (Kaitai Shinsho) and "Medical Outline" (Ihan Teikō), most are books on prescriptions and medicines, and we have never heard of any that deal with physiology or pathology. Is this not because scholars desire quick success?

Now, the way of Western medicine fundamentally aims to clarify the internal structure of the human body, with physiology and pathology following next, and then pharmaceutical preparations and treatment methods following after these. If we compare this to constructing a house, the internal structure is the foundation stones, physiology and pathology are the pillars, and pharmaceutical preparations and treatment methods are the upper floors and roof. Now we have foundation stones but no pillars, yet suddenly attempt to build the roof structure - there is no such logic to this.

Our Master Shinsai, having insight into this matter, had Master Ogata and Aoki Shūsuke translate several books on pathology, intending to reconcile various theories
