17th day: A pardon was granted for Kuma Hachinojō's house confinement (kōmon), and this was communicated today. It is stated that tomorrow, one is to appear before the public authorities (Bakufu) accompanied by a representative. Today, five people received court ranks (位階). Those who received imperial sanction (勅許): Yoshihisa, [某]hisa, Yoshimichi, Michinao, and Ikuhisa. 18th day: Both aforementioned persons appeared (before the authorities) accompanied by their representatives. They were immediately pardoned, and were dispatched to pay their respects (御礼). 19th day: A meeting was held. Regarding the painting of a portrait (御影像) and a valley scene by the painter Kanō Geki, it was stated that the cost would be approximately one kan-me (a unit of currency), so ten silver pieces were received and he departed. Regarding the matter of Kuma Hachinojō's bird (incident), which had resulted in the confinement of several people, the granting of pardon was publicly announced, and this morning (each person) is said to have appeared (at the shrine). Next, the litigation magistrates (公事奉行) Ishijima Saburōzaemon and Endō Tashirō appeared as record-keepers (帳付). (Endō Tashirō) is the son-in-law of Higashi no Ichishō. The two stated: "Regarding the ruling issued at the recent litigation, the public authorities' records show that the paddy fields and shōden (化粧田, ceremonial fields) acquired by Teishin are to be granted to the Tonomonokami, and the tribute (上り物) to be submitted to the shrine is only the amount covered by the vermilion-seal documents — more than 8 koku and 7 to. We believed there may have been a mishearing during the previous communication, and so we have brought this to your attention." In response to this, it was publicly announced within the shrine community, and immediately through the responsible official (沙汰人), the Tonomonokami was notified regarding the necessary course of action (進退). Furthermore, (the question was raised as to) how the amount that was collected and submitted to Oribe-no-shō last year should be handled — whether it should be納ered to the shrine, or whether the portion should be returned to the Tonomonokami.
