(Continued from previous page) There is a brief pause, during which the shrine officials (shashi) and ujibito (clan members/shrine attendants) together bow while standing. They take their seats in the temporary pavilion (akuya), and the fumi-no-tsukasa (史), fumino-tsukasa-no-shō (史生), kanzukasa (官掌), and vice-envoy take their seats. The Benden (弁殿, the nobleman's representative) is positioned to the east-mountain side (east), on the west; behind the fumi-no-tsukasa sit four people facing north-northwest in their seats again. On the east side are the fumi-no-tsukasa-no-shō; the middle two are kanzukasa; the west side is the auxiliary envoy (soenotsukasa). Next, the shrine officials and ujibito each take their respective seats. Next,職久 (Shokkyū) and 就久 (Jukkyū) enter inside the curtain, open the sacred doors, purify the inner and outer sanctuaries, spread a cloth path (endō) for the procession, and make all necessary preparations. This cloth is prepared and laid out by the shrine community itself. Next, the two come out, don the chihaya (ritual garment), face-covering, and hand-covering, and enter once more. Next, the lights are extinguished, and the Benden and all other worshippers prostrate themselves. Next, the sacred object is transferred (御遷し). Next, the garden torches (庭燎, niwabi) are lit. Next, the officials in charge of presenting the sacred offerings (御奉幣) take their positions (this is the Kamon-ryō, the Bureau of Cleaning). The tasseled lamp stands are set up (and lit). A half-mat (usuheri, thin-bordered mat) on top of a rush mat is placed on the stone platform along the path at Kataoka Bridge. Next, the white curtains and hanging curtains along the path before the sanctuary are rolled up and placed above. Next, the cloth of the rush-mat path is removed. Next, the ujibito take their seats at the main seats (honza). Next, Jukkyū moves to the western side of the worship hall (haiden) and sits. Next, Shokkyū likewise moves to the western side and sits. Next, the Benden rises from his seat and advances to the worship hall (putting on his shoes)...
