(Continued from previous page) [The Benden] performs a bow (yū), sits and bows again. Next, he stands and performs two prostrations (nihai), settles into a formal seated position (anza), prostrates fully, and recites the norito (ritual prayers). Next, he stands again, performs two prostrations, sits and bows, puts on his shoes and bows once more, then withdraws. There is no presentation of sacred offerings (hōhei) on this occasion. Next, Shokkyū and Jukkyū enter the inner sanctuary (naijin), and five ujibito take their places at the great floor (ōtoko) and below, advancing and placing the sacred food offerings (otomo) in the inner and outer sanctuaries. First, the spiced herb preparation (jukō) [placed into toso wine, served in a doubled ceramic cup (kawarake) that holds three measures, presented on a round tray (marubōn)]. Next, the sacred rice container (ohitsu) and its provisions are arranged as at the time of the seasonal festival (sekku). Next: four salted sea bream (shio-tai); as a "throat piece" (ichinodo-mono), mackerel (saba); each placed on ceramic dishes (kawarake) lined with shell-mat (kaishiki). Next, the provisions for the outer sanctuary (gejin) consist of two eight-legged stands (hakkyaku), the same as the daily provisions for the Second Shrine (Ninomiya). The front high-mounded offerings (mae-takamori) and those below are as usual. Next, at the Bridge Hall (Hashidono), everyone first receives the toso wine, along with a distribution of three shō of rice. The田口 (Taguchi) sake is poured out, but as there is not enough, the administrator (satanin) provides an additional three-shō barrel to supplement. Furthermore, this toso was privately requested from the Director of the Bureau of Medicine (Ten'yakuryō no kami), and one dose was allocated to and used by the shrine. The sea bream and "throat piece" were prepared and presented for the first time on this occasion after careful deliberation. They did not exist until the Kan'ei era. Regarding the ceramic cups (kawarake): at Kifune Shrine, they were borrowed from the miko (shrine maidens) for use; but on this occasion, they were distributed from the shoshi-dayū for use.
