昨年来の普仏戦争について各国の記録者たちが絶え間なく書き記しているが、或いは通信標や截線（電信線）と【毎か】車が直接その境地に到達できない場合があるため、その言葉が風聞によって伝わることが多く、虚偽が多い。人がこれを編纂し校正しようとしても、また同様に容易ではない。況んや憂鬱な気持ちで別に一書を作ることをや。
アメリカのブロケット氏は早くからこの書を著し、両国の戦争の始末と政治の得失について（記した）。

Since last year, writers from various nations have been continuously recording the Franco-Prussian War, but sometimes telegraph lines and vehicles cannot reach the battlefield directly, so news is often transmitted by hearsay and contains many falsehoods. Even when people attempt to compile and edit these accounts, it is equally difficult. How much more so when one feels melancholy about creating an entirely separate book on the subject.
The American Mr. Brockett wrote this book early on, (recording) the complete course of the war between the two nations and the gains and losses in their politics.
