(Continuing from the previous page) It was asked how matters were handled at the time of Kunaishō (Senior Negi)'s transfer to a new post. At that time, Kunaishō had declined and thus an exception was made. Regarding the current matter, he stated that he had formally declined, noting that it had been declared a hereditary position (fudai shoku) since the time of the promotion in court rank. Furthermore, since it was conveyed the previous evening that the matter of the hi-kazu (the number of days of ritual observance) had also been communicated to the sōdai (representatives), an explanation was given of the complex nature of the shrine's laws, along with the circumstances regarding the kyūden (stipend fields) and the assignment to the ji-za (secondary seat). [Written in red: This passage is difficult to interpret; recorded as in the original] When it was stated that "with a little understanding, it would not be necessary to request the shrine community to provide an escort," each person reported that when this was conveyed, (the imperial representatives) had said they were completely unaware of such circumstances, and that since both御所 (imperial residences) had made the request, the matter of substituting the spring hi-kazu for autumn was being asked of the shrine community. It was acknowledged that the various complexities made compliance difficult. However, since it would be entirely unwelcome for shrine laws to be broken through the agency of the court's传奏 (court liaison officials), the order was given to discontinue the consultations. While discussions were being held to reach a consensus within the shrine (both Upper and Lower Kamo Shrines), Kobori Jinuemon arrived on duty, causing various interruptions, and (the meeting) was adjourned. [Written in red: Other matters are omitted] The assembled members deliberated, saying: "First and foremost, the consideration shown by the Tensō (court liaison) is deeply appreciated. However, as stated in the earlier deliberation, if there is any acceptable compromise, it would fulfill the honored command and also meet the Tensō's request — a most precious outcome." With this, various proposals for a compromise were discussed, but no substantially different plan emerged. Accordingly, both Minbu no Shōyū and Uma no Gonnokami were summoned, the substance of the deliberations was explained to them, and they were asked to put forward any ideas they might have. However, since the shrine community as a whole had not been able to reach agreement, if the two men likewise had no proposal to offer, then substituting the spring hi-kazu for the autumn hi-kazu would...
