(Continued from the previous page) The members of the Seven Families stated that at that time (Kanbun 7, 1667), the appointment had been made at the earnest request of the late father. After that, when the transfer from Hoka-gon-negi to Shō-negi took place, and subsequently on the many occasions when the matter of transfer was communicated, it was due to a refusal at that time that a bypassing of the normal order (chōetsu) occurred.
On this occasion, there is no such grounds for refusal, and if it is their intention to claim this as a hereditary post (fudai-shoku), it cannot simply be left as it stands. The post of Kannushi has been filled by both the Mori and Matsushita families, and since the shogunal ruling of the Kanbun era (1661), Okamoto Kunai was added, making this a post administered through sequential transfer (shidai-tennin) among the Seven Families. In particular, although it is claimed that the position of Gon-hōri is also a post of the Hayashi family, this cannot be substantiated. The purport of this is found in the daily records (hinami). The idea that only the Hayashi family should hold the post of Shō-hōri as a hereditary position, when it is a post of sequential transfer among the Seven Families, is entirely incomprehensible. The deliberations concluded that this point was reasonable. Furthermore, since Kunai-gon-daibu Shigamoto had already submitted a claim regarding the Kifune post, it does not appear that the direct appointment of Shō-hōri to the Hayashi family is warranted. In any case, it was decided that if Hayashi Sanmi submitted a written statement, the members would reconvene to deliberate, and the assembly dispersed.
One: At a subsequent meeting, all members again assembled, and in addition to the above, Sahei also attended. However, Shigamoto was absent. It was announced at the meeting hall that Hayashi Sanmi had submitted a written statement through Shigamoto.
Memorandum of Oral Statement
On this occasion, regarding the retirement of the Kannushi, it has been communicated through the intermediary (satanin) that the Shō-hōri should undergo transfer. Regarding the Gon-hōri, it was previously decreed at the office of the Imperial Messenger (Gidensō), Lord Hiramatu Chūnagon, that the position should be subject to transfer. Regarding the Shō-hōri, it was decreed that it should be left as it stands— (continues)
