21st Day — Kinotoi (癸亥) — Cloudy Item: From before dawn this morning, I went to pray at the Kitano Sacred Shrine (Kitano Seibyo). I was accompanied by Kunishi, and returned home around the Hour of the Dragon (approximately 8 a.m.). Item: As today is the birthday of His Excellency the Lord of Kujō (Kujō Ufu-kō), prayer scrolls (kanjū) were brought as offerings in accordance with the usual annual custom. The representatives were Hirohisa and Hoaku. Although in previous years an audience (taimen) has customarily been granted, this year, due to a prolonged illness, no audience was held, and only sake was bestowed. Item: Today, the distribution of stipend coins (roku-sen) for the shrine officers was circulated. Three shō of kinpuku (gilt offerings), plus 2 tō 4 gō via bowstring (tsuru), and in addition, 10 mon of Hassaku coins were distributed. This applied to all three of the shrine officers. Item: Regarding the earlier matter involving the Timber Mountain Magistrate (Kiyama Bugyō), there was another accounting session today, held at the residence of Tokusue. Item: The representatives who had appeared — Hirohisa and Hoaku — on their way back from visiting Lord Kujō, took the opportunity to call upon Lord Hamuro Chūnagon to offer congratulations, since it had been heard that Lord Hamuro Dainagon had been promoted to Junior First Rank (Jūichii) at the age of 59, which was considered a remarkable distinction. As he was away from home, they left word and returned, arriving back past the Hour of the Ram (approximately 2 p.m.). Incidentally, the matter of calling upon the imperial court liaison (tensō), Lord Hamuro, to offer congratulations had been discussed with Head Priest Masahisa today, and since Masahisa also found it appropriate, the visit proceeded as described. Item: Today also, firewood distribution at the council hall. Laborers same as yesterday. 22nd Day — Kinoe-ne (甲子) — Clear (Marginal note: The riverside cooling at Shijō Kawara ends today. In a normal year it concludes on the 18th, but this year the water was high, so although it should have started on the 7th, it began on the 10th — hence a request was made to extend the period by that many days accordingly.) Item: Today's monthly gathering (tsukiami yoriai) was held. Those in attendance: Head Priest Masahisa, Hoshō, Yasukiyo, Kanenori, Tomikiyo, Kunishi, Suenaga, Shigeki, Yasunori, Shigenori, Suekimi, Tokusue, Sueyoshi, Ubuyuki, Tomitoshi, Fumiak, Hoaku, Hodo, Naoyasu; Gakuken of the assembly hall made the formal announcements. Item: On the 18th, Lord Kujō sent, as is customary, five to (approximately 90 liters) of rice as birthday prayer offerings (go-kito-ryō). This came with an accompanying letter from the court noble's official (shōdaibū), Ishii Kawachi no Kami. A receipt was sent in the usual manner. Item: On the 19th, River Magistrate Sakyō-no-gonnosuke sent an inquiry as to whether there would be any inconvenience if the fish-catching for sacred offerings (shinku no gyoryō) were to take place on the coming 24th. A reply was sent indicating that the 24th would indeed be suitable. Item: On the 20th, Genbashichi, the horse physician, came to report that upon examining the sacred horse (shинме), he found no abnormalities. However, he advised that if the horse were given medicinal treatment at this time, it would also be beneficial for the coming cold season. The dosage would be one preparation of approximately 5 monme, administered as a decoction, to be given over approximately three days. After deliberation, it was decided that administering the medicine was indeed appropriate. Furthermore, since the stable becomes hot and stuffy during the hot season, it was to be conveyed to the stable keeper (bettō) that the horse should be led out around evening approximately six times a month in the vicinity of the training ground to cool down, and that attention should also be paid to the condition of its hooves. Item: On the 21st, in celebration of Lord Kujō's birthday, five shō of sacred sake (o-miki) were offered to the eight shrines of the Main Shrine (Hongu). The members currently on duty served as attendants. Item: On the same day, representatives Hirohisa and Hoaku appeared to present the prayer scrolls (kanjū) to Lord Kujō. The shōdaibū of Shinano-koji and Tamba-no-kami came out to receive them, and sake was bestowed as usual. This year, owing to a slight illness, there was no audience. Item: On the occasion of the above visit, congratulations were also extended to the imperial court liaison (tensō), Lord Hamuro Chūnagon (formerly Dainagon), upon receiving the investiture of Junior First Rank (Jūichii no senge). The heat of the season also provided the occasion for an inquiry into his health. Item: Kibei, clerk of Kahokuya Mohei, came to call and inquired as to the date on which the silver debt would be repaid. Gakuken spoke with him and sent him away, saying that word would be sent in due course. Item: Mimasaka-no-kami Kiyoko submitted a written petition regarding planned construction (zōsaku). The retained copy reads as follows: Petition (Statement of Request) On this occasion, in the plot of 14 tsubo (borrowed land belonging to Kinzōin) located in Okamoto-chō, I wish to build my personal residence, measuring 2.5 ken in width by 1.5 ken in depth, with an entryway attached at the middle section. The roof is to be thatched with straw on both [sides/gables], and the entire structure is to be of the dug-in, rope-tied (horikomenawamusubi) construction method...
