**[30th Day, continued]**
Regarding the notification to the River Magistrate (*kawa-bugyō*), while a small assembly (*ko-yoriai*) should have been convened, given the circumstances of the day, Gakunori went to consult with the chief priest (*kannushi*). The response was: "It would be appropriate to dam up the watercourse flowing from around Futamata, or from the Koyama–Nakamura area, where the overflow runs down to the Takehana-guchi outlet. As for damming the outer riverbank areas, since there are no officials available to attend today, proceeding as described above should be acceptable." Based on this, the River Magistrate, Tanbanoske Kiyo■, was immediately summoned and instructions were issued from the assembly hall.
- Around noon, two *zōshō* (administrative officers) and three *shokuchū* (on-duty officials) had assembled at the Deliberation Hall (*Hyōgijo*), but as no notice had yet come from the Noh *tayū* (troupe master), the *nakama* (attendant) Ichibei was sent to the *bettō* (superintendent) to press the matter. The *tayū* replied that "one of the performers named Eijirō has not yet arrived from Kyoto; he will be coming shortly, so please wait a moment." As is customary, three messenger dispatches came from the *tayū*: notice of entering the dressing room (*gakuya-iri*), notice of costuming (*ishō-tsuke*), and notice that the performance was beginning. However, this year, after the above prompting, only the notice of entering the dressing room arrived, and no subsequent messenger came; therefore the *nakama* Gonbei was again sent to the *bettō*, whereupon word came that the performance would begin shortly. In the meantime, the hour had already reached midday, and so all five officials proceeded to attend directly. Along the way, the *bettō* joined the party. The attendants consisted of two *nakama* in formal hemp *kamishimo*, two *komono* (lower attendants, as the general representative's escorts), and three *denma-bu* (relay-horse foot attendants, as escorts for the *shokuchū*). In addition, Gorōtarō, Kin'emon, and Kawaramachi Magoshirō were hired — three men total. Of these, Gorōtarō was present in an official capacity, and the other two were hired. All three wore hemp *kamishimo* and carried staffs, for the purpose of guard duty. In addition to the above, there were eight pike-bearers (*bōtsuki*). One foot attendant carried the lunchboxes; today each person brought their own. As in previous years, for the *shokuchū* and Hodo's four members in attendance, Gonzaemon was assigned to arrange the provisions: one tiered box of sliced rice, one tiered box of simmered dishes (*nishime*), grilled tofu, shiitake mushrooms, taro, cold konnyaku, green soybeans; and a tiered box of side dishes consisting of three slices of sea bream, simmered stingray (*ei*), salted shellfish, pickled ginger (*hajikame*), etc. Sake was provided from the shrine. Hokaku had his own separate lunchbox. The leftovers from the lunchboxes were given to the *nakama*, Gorōtarō, and others. Today, lunch allowances were distributed to the attendant *nakama* and *komono* — four *gō* per person per day, distributed proportionally among the five.
- Around the time of the second Noh piece, an evening shower with thunder began. Rain fell intermittently throughout the day. Toward evening, the Noh *tayū* Gonroku came forward with a request, saying: "Today, due to the thunderstorm, things have been delayed considerably, and on top of that, the *ōtsuzumi* (large hand drum) player has suddenly fallen ill, so I have been managing alone. This will not do for tomorrow; I would like to send word to Kyoto tonight. In view of this, I humbly request that the next *kyōgen* piece be omitted and that *Tōru* be performed as a half-Noh (*han-nō*)." The *kyōgen* scheduled was *Kasanoshita*, but permission was granted to omit it, and *Tōru* was also reduced to a half-Noh. It should be noted that Gonroku had come out to meet the party at the gate of Jūrakuji Temple when we set out, and also accompanied us back to that vicinity on the return. At the shrine administrative area (*shayōba*) today were Hoshō, Hirokyu, Gyōkyu, and others. Yōsei and Sankō were also seen. Adjacent to the shrine administrative area, in what appeared to form a single continuous area, were the raised gallery seats (*sajiki*) of Etsushi, Fumiai, and others.
- Since today's performance began exceptionally late, Gonroku was informed tonight that tomorrow's performance should begin early, to which he replied with respectful acknowledgment.
- Tonight, the *Nagori no Goshinji* (farewell divine rite) was held. Attendance at the shrine administrative service (*shayō sankin*) was carried out as customary by the *daikan* (deputy administrator) and *ijitsugu* (rank official).
