Official Department Records
1. On the 22nd day of the 6th month of Jōkyō 3 (1686), as there was a shortage of gate guards from the regular guard units and reserve units of foot soldiers, it was ordered that foot soldiers from the advance guard units and Suginari units should also take turns manning the guard posts. This order was conveyed to Chief Advance Guard Commander (monthly duty) Katō Buemon and Suginari Unit Commander Katō Jūemon through Inspector Niwa Hachizaemon and Kaifuku Kansuke.

Geba (Dismounting) Gate
1. On the 16th day of the 12th month of Kyōhō 4 (1719), in connection with the revision of regulations for the Geba, Taiko, and Kitte gates, two senior officers each were summoned and given one copy each of the written instructions. However, since retainers also served at the Taiko gate, Arakawa Sukeemon was also given one copy of the written instructions. It was ordered that three senior retainers and Sukeemon should also be summoned to receive their copies, as conveyed through Ashida Uemon.
Regulations △Triangular marks indicate items outside the standard articles
1. One advance guard commander shall serve day and night shifts. Naturally, off-duty foot soldiers and others must be strictly supervised, and suspicious persons entering or leaving must be thoroughly examined. Even if they claim to be on official business, they must not be allowed to pass carelessly. Furthermore, there must be no impolite or improper behavior at the guard stations.
△However, during the lord's absence, during the day only unit members serve, with commanders staying overnight only. When his lordship is present in the castle, the same rules as when the lord is in residence apply. Naturally, during temporary absences for overnight stays or falconry, day and night shifts must be maintained.
[Marginal note in red] Four external food replacements [see frame 14, line 8]
△1. Four unit members, including senior officers for day shifts and three for gate duty. At night, one person stays overnight at the guard post within the masugata (defensive square enclosure).
△However, during important castle business or when people from other domains visit the castle, two additional guards are assigned at the discretion of the inspector.
1. The five bows, twenty firearms, ten spears, and other weapons kept at the gate guard post must be carefully maintained and displayed.
△However, those in the custody of Hikosaka Matahee include bows with quivers (custody arrangements vary), firearms with quick-loading equipment, and piercing poles, barbed spears, twisted spears, etc.
1. The gate shall open at 6 AM and close at 6 PM. However, from 6 PM until the end of night duty, only the small gate shall remain open. Generally, during the lord's absence, only the small gate is used, and when the lord is in Edo, even the small gate must be closed promptly at 6 PM.
1. Mounted riders and carrying spears are absolutely forbidden.
However, this does not apply to those who have residences within the gate area.
1. Regarding the entry and exit of lower-ranking persons and the carrying in and out of various goods, for the main bailey and second bailey, inspections are conducted at the Taiko gate, and for the lord's quarters...

1. According to records from the 3rd day of the 3rd month of Kyōhō 18 (1733), because Princess Hatsu was residing in the official residence until last year, even during the lord's absence, curtains were hung and commanders served day and night shifts as when the lord was in residence. However, since Princess Hatsu has now departed for Edo, from this year forward, during the lord's absence, service shall be according to standard regulations.
Five bows, five quivers with hunting arrows [with up/down markings], containing ten arrows each. This allocation has been in effect since the 15th day of the 7th month of Genroku 16 (1703).
1. On the 15th day of the 7th month of Genroku 16 (1703), it was ordered that five bows each should be sent to the Geba and Taiko gates. Accordingly, from the 18th of the same month, the said equipment was provided, and it was ordered that the bows should be regularly maintained. This was conveyed to the respective gate guard commanders and military heads.
