西浦賀（にしうらが）新地町（しんちまち）和泉（いづみ）屋 何某（なにがし）の咄（はな）しに聞（きく）先（せん）年の津（つ）
浪（なみ）の節（せつ）は頻（しき）りに海（うみ）鳴（な）り日（ひ）の色さへ只（たゞ）ならねば海端（うなばた）へ何（いづ）れも
出て見居たれども然（さ）せる事も無故（なきゆゑ）に又立 戻（もど）り帳面（ちやうめん）を記（しる）し居
たるがひた〳〵と袂（たもと）に水の付まゝにこは冷（つめ）たしと筆（ふで）を持（も）ち立
てば家内（やうち）へ水 上来（あげきた）り只（たゞ）茫然（ぼうぜん）と立たるのみ間も無（なく）水の引果（ひきはて）
て見れば手元に置たる者（もの）皆（みな）引往（ひきゆか）れて一身（そのみ）計（ばか）り残（のこ）りたるその
不思議（ふしぎ）さ跡（あと）にて聞ば家の儘（まゝ）海へ動溺（ぼつでき）したるもあり又 或（ある）人は

西浦賀の新地町に住む和泉屋某の話によると、以前の津波の際には、しきりに海が鳴り、日の色さえただならぬ様子だったので、皆が海端へ出て様子を見ていたものの、とりたてて何事もなかったため、また戻って帳面を記していたところ、ひたひたと袂に水が触れてくるのを感じ、「これは冷たい」と思いながら筆を持って立ち上がると、家の中まで水が上がってきており、ただ茫然と立ち尽くすばかりであった。やがて水が引き終えてみると、手元に置いておいたものはすべて引いていかれ、自分の身ひとつだけが残されていた。その不思議さよ。後で聞けば、家ごと海へ流れ沈んだものもあったという。またある人は、津波と聞くや否や、主人の具足櫃を背負って山へ逃げたが、早くも足元まで潮が来たため、「これでは命が助からない」と、櫃の蓋を開けて用金だけを取り出し、身軽になって走り登り、辛うじて命を拾うことができた。後で見れば、非常に高い松の枝に主人の甲冑の兜が引っかかって残っていたという話など、聞くだけでも身の毛がよだつことであったが、今回は、

それほど激しくはなかったものの、夜中のことであっただけに、いっそう心を痛めた。しかし、人々の溺死者はなかった。これは津波ではなく、ただ南風が大きな潮を吹き上げてきたためであろう。
◯また、金沢・本牧あたりでは、持ち主のない船が吹き寄せてきて、その船によってつないで置いてあった手持ちの船が破損した。これは吹き寄せてきた船が大きかったためであろう。
◯街道は、箱根・小田原・大磯・平塚あたりは、海も近い場所であるため、道・橋・家屋の破損が多数見られた。藤沢・戸塚・保土ヶ谷では、おおむね大きな荒れは見られなかったものの、風にも風なりの筋（流れ）というものがあって、思いがけず大きな家を損じ、また倒れるとは思えないような大木が倒れているのも見受けられたため、一概に（被害の程度を）言いがたい。
◯小田原より風祭を経て、立田より湯本へは向かわず、直接塔の沢へ行く道に大きな橋があったが、山からの洪水（山水）に押し流されて、岸の川のところまで流れ出ていた。

According to a man named Izumiya of Shinchi-machi in Nishi-Uraga: during the previous tsunami, the sea had been roaring incessantly, and even the color of the sun was ominous, so everyone went down to the water's edge to see what was happening. But as nothing particularly alarming occurred, they returned inside, and he had settled back to writing in his ledger. Then, feeling the water lapping quietly against his sleeve, he thought, "How cold," and rose to his feet, brush still in hand — only to find that water had already risen inside his house. He could do nothing but stand there in a daze. When the water finally receded, everything he had within reach had been swept away, leaving only himself behind. Such was the strangeness of it. Afterwards, he heard that some houses had been carried whole into the sea and sunk. Another person, upon hearing the cry of "tsunami!", had hoisted his master's armor chest onto his back and fled up the mountain — but the tide was already lapping at his feet, and thinking "I cannot survive this," he opened the lid of the chest, took out only the money inside, and, now unencumbered, ran up the slope, barely managing to save his life. Afterwards, it was found that his master's helmet had been caught and left hanging high up in the branches of a pine tree — a story that, even just to hear, made one's flesh creep. As for the present incident,

it was not so violent as that, yet being in the middle of the night, it caused people all the more distress. Fortunately, there were no drowning deaths among the people. This was presumably not a tsunami, but rather the result of a great tide being driven up by southerly winds.
◯ In the area of Kanazawa and Honmoku, ownerless boats were blown in, and in the process damaged the moored vessels that had been tied up there. This was likely due to the great size of the boats that were driven in.
◯ Along the main highway, in the areas of Hakone, Odawara, Ōiso, and Hiratsuka — all places close to the sea — great numbers of roads, bridges, and houses were found to be damaged. In Fujisawa, Totsuka, and Hodogaya, there was for the most part no great devastation to be seen; yet wind has its own particular paths and currents, and unexpectedly large houses were found to be damaged, and trees that appeared too great to fall had toppled — so one cannot make any blanket statement about the damage.
◯ On the road from Odawara, passing through Kaza-matsuri and then from Tatsuta heading not toward Yumoto but directly toward Tō-no-sawa, there had been a large bridge; this had been swept away by mountain floodwaters and carried out as far as the riverbank.
