**[Right page]** ○ The day after the storm, seven or eight palanquins (辻駕籠, street-for-hire palanquins) were discovered washed ashore along the riverbank near Eitaibashi Bridge. About twenty people came searching, saying that the palanquin bearers employed at various palanquin houses had not returned home. Upon seeing these palanquins, they understood that the bearers had perished. Reflecting on this, it seems that people who had been enjoying themselves at the temporary brothels (仮宅) in the Nakachō area were startled by the violent storm and flooding, and, sparing no expense, hastily hired palanquins to rush home. The bearers, unaware that Eitaibashi Bridge had collapsed, came racing through the pitch-black darkness with their lanterns blown out and unable to see their footing, and tumbled into the gap where the bridge had broken, drowning together with their passengers. This is why only the palanquins drifted to shore. It is said that during the Bunka era, the bridge collapsed during a festival at the Hachiman Shrine, and many people died. Counting the years since then, it is said to amount to nearly fifty years — this too must be counted as one of the strange occurrences. ○ In the area of Nishi-Ryōgoku, the waterside tea houses along the riverside, the sideshow booths along the Hirokōji, were all blown to pieces without exception, and more than half of the stall-shops were blown down. Two large vessels were blown up onto the western corner beneath the bridge. This bridge had been rebuilt the previous year, but this time it was severely warped and bent. **[Left page]** In various places around Yoshikawa-chō and Dōbō-chō, damage occurred; the fish stalls and sword-guard shops (鍔店) in the area suffered minor damage. Across from Yanagibashi, in the Daichi and Fukui-chō areas outside Asakusa Mitsuke, the back tenements (裏長屋) were largely destroyed. More than ten front-facing shops along Okuramae Street were destroyed, and the back tenements beyond counting. At Torigoe and Shinbori-bata, the compound row houses (組屋敷) were damaged in many places; the Abegawa-chō area also suffered damage in various spots. One west wing tenement belonging to Lord Matsudaira Kansuke collapsed; the Tachibana domain tenements at Samisenbori collapsed; and the front-gate tenements at Ōkubo were damaged. ○ In Kurofune-chō, along Namiki-dōri, in Komagata-chō, and in Nishiinaka-chō, the great majority of tea houses — front and back — were damaged. The tenements within the Asakusa precincts suffered minor damage. The great lantern at the Niō-mon gate of Kaminarimon was blown away and fell into the street. The copper torii gate of Nishinomiya Inari Shrine was toppled. The bell tower of the Three Shrines (Sanja) collapsed from midway up. At Okuyama, the large booth displaying lifelike wax figures was crushed when the great ginkgo tree fell, and both the figures and the structure were smashed to pieces. Beyond this, an enormous number of large trees were toppled. In Okuyama there stood a great ginkgo tree, popularly known as the "Rain Ginkgo" and "Wind Ginkgo." This tree, twelve or thirteen days before the day of the great storm — when there was not even the slightest breeze — spontaneously snapped and fell on its own. People were alarmed by this and said, "This is no ordinary matter," and indeed, this great calamity came to pass. Later (continues)...
