**[Right page]** It is said that if members of a confraternity (講中) carve the branches of this ginkgo tree into prayer beads (数珠) and carry them, they will be protected from disaster. ○ Outside the Yadaijin-mon gate, the temporary brothels (仮宅) had their roofs entirely damaged, with some leaning precariously. The theaters of the Three Troupes at Saruwaka-chō all had their roofs completely damaged, and the tea houses suffered extensive damage as well. The projecting sections of the tea houses in the Nakata area were damaged. The Matsudaya temporary brothel was completely destroyed. Along the Umamichi road, the west side of the bamboo grove area was entirely blown down. The Kita-Umamichi and Tamachi areas suffered extensive damage. The Yamano-shuku, Hanakawado, and Shōden-chō thoroughfare areas saw no particular damage to townhouses. ○ In Shin-Yoshiwara, a fire broke out from the western riverbank side, and the few remaining brothels within the licensed quarter were partially burned. In the area of Daionji temple gate and Senzoku village, all the thatched-roof dwellings were completely toppled. Furthermore, both sides of Sanya-dōri suffered damage, and the flooding at Hashiba and Imado was severe. Many of the residents of the Yamano-shuku and Hanakawado areas had been temporarily lodging within or around the temporary brothels, but since these were makeshift structures, they were immediately blown apart from all sides. With nowhere to go, they huddled in place, and from the middle of the river, large yellow objects — each roughly the size of three or four stacked four-to casks — rose up into the air, any number of them, swirling upward then sweeping downward before suddenly scattering. The terror was beyond all description. **[Left page]** It was said that, like a whirlwind (辻風) gathering up sand, the wind must have condensed and collected together before crashing down. ○ On the far side of Azumabashi Bridge, the southern section of the bridge collapsed and fell. Various places in Koume and Oshiage were damaged, and many houses in the villages of Mukōjima were destroyed. Kita-Honjō, Nakanogō, the Narihirabashi-dōri area, Ishihara, Benten-kōji, the Kita-Warigeshui canal road, and the Hōonji-bashi-dōri area all suffered severe damage. The area around Kameido village and the Five Hundred Arhats temple was devastated by major flooding. Along the Minami-Warigeshui-dōri thoroughfare, both large and small samurai residences and townhouses alike suffered from the high tide (storm surge): in places where the ground was high, the water just barely swept across the floorboards, while in lower-lying places the water rose more than three shaku (approximately 90 cm) above floor level. Houses were swept away and battered by the current and wind; the number of houses that collapsed or were washed away was beyond counting. A man named Matsushichi, who made his living by going in and out of the Silver Mint Office (銀座役所) on various errands, had long resided in Fukagawa-Motomachi. However, in the great earthquake of the night of the second day of the tenth month of the Hare Year (Ansei 2, 1855), he lost his home. Having a slight acquaintance in the countryside two or three chō from Rahkanji temple in Honjō, he evacuated there and borrowed a small house to live in. Then, on the night of the twenty-fifth of the eighth month of this year (Ansei 3, 1856), during the great storm, the storm surge rose all at once, and the residents of this area, young and old, fled in all directions (continues)...
