問天漢。伝￣ニ云河-影￣ト。又云￣ク清気。埤雅￣ニ云￣ク。河-精上￣ニ為＿二天
漢＿一。物理論￣ニ曰￣ク。水気発￣テ而升￣リ。精華浮￣ヲ＿レ上曰＿二天河＿一霊憲￣ノ
注￣ニモ亦以＿二水精＿一為＿二天河＿一。今謂￣フ是星￣ト。恐￣クハ未＿レ然也。

【天漢（銀河）について】
問：天漢（銀河）について問う。『伝』には「河の影である」と言い、また「清らかな気である」とも言う。『埤雅』には「河の精気が上にあって天漢となる」と言う。『物理論』には「水気が発して上昇し、その精華が上に浮かぶものを天河と言う」とある。『霊憲』の注にも、水の精気をもって天河とする。今（これを）星であると言う者があるが、恐らくそうではないであろう。
答：古人は天漢を星ではないと考え、諸々の列宿（星座）の天の上には置かなかった。その光は、日の光を受けて映える軽い雲に似ていると考え、空中の月天（月の天球）の下に存在する、恒常的な清らかな気に過ぎないとした（のみである）。

【On the Milky Way (Tianhan)】
Question: I ask about the Tianhan (Milky Way). The "Tradition" (Zhuan) says it is "the reflection of the river," and also says it is "pure qi (energy)." The Piya states: "The essence of the river rises above to become the Tianhan." The Wulilun says: "Water vapor rises upward, and its refined essence floating above is called the Tianhe (Heavenly River)." The commentary on the Linxian also takes the essence of water to be the Tianhe. Some now say it is made of stars, but this is probably not correct.
Answer: The ancients believed that the Tianhan (Milky Way) was not stars, and thus did not place it among the various lunar lodges (constellations) in the heavens. They thought its light resembled that of light clouds reflecting sunlight, and considered it to exist in the sky below the lunar sphere, being nothing more than a perpetual pure qi.
