地震は少ない。砂土の地は、気が疎らで閉塞を受けないので、地震は少ない。泥土の地は、気を蔵する空間がないので地震は少ない。温暖の地で、石の多い地は、地下に空穴があり、熱気が吹き入って冷気に摂斂され、極まれば舒放して、その地を激搏する。これは銃薬が高楼巨塔の下にあって、火を得て発するようなもので、その震衝を被らないものはない。必ず大地全体が震えるということはない。地震は各処の各気が各々動くものである。故に一方が震える時、地を移し山を移動させることができるものがある。地裂けて城郷が全く陥没するものがある。地に新山を生じ、海に新島を生じるものがある。江河を逆流旁散させるものがある。新泉の脈を開き、旧派の流れを塞ぐものがある。これらは皆震の軽重によって変異があるのである。震の後、地下の燥気が猛迫し、熱が変じて火となって出れば、震は停止する。
海
問う：百川の水は海に会する。海底にまた竅穴があり、旋転運動して泉脈となる。これは生生して已まない運旋である。そうでなければ、海はただこれを承けるだけで、百千万年で満ちることができるであろうか。
答う：天地万物は、生あれば必ず死あり、長あれば必ず消あり、これは自然の理である。乾坤を古人は造化と謂った。造って化しなければ、太虚は充満するであろう。化して造らなければ、大塊もまた消失するであろう。物物皆然りである。水だけが独り運転して生生をなすであろうか。
図象幾表に曰く、地中の虚竅は甚だ多く、皆水気火気と、虚の行う所である。虚気と水火は皆相接して際なく、而して能く相化するものである。地中の気は水と接し、水は気に随って到る。而して土の情は本冷であり、気がその冷に遇えば、亦化して水となる。故に地中は皆水である。水は降を主として土に浮かび、火は升を主として土に生ずる。

earthquakes are few. In sandy soil, the qi is sparse and does not receive blockage, so earthquakes are few. In muddy soil, there is no space to store qi, so earthquakes are few. In warm lands with much stone, there are cavities below, and hot qi blows in and is constrained by cold qi; when this reaches its extreme, it expands and violently strikes the earth. This is like gunpowder beneath tall towers and great pagodas that receives fire and explodes—nothing escapes being shaken by the impact. The entire great earth does not necessarily shake together. Earthquakes occur when the individual qi of each place moves individually. Therefore, when one region shakes, there are cases that can cause the earth to shift and mountains to move. There are cases that can cause the earth to split and entire towns to sink completely. There are cases that can cause new mountains to appear on land and new islands to appear in the sea. There are cases that can cause rivers to flow backward and scatter sideways. There are cases that can open new spring channels and block old waterways. All of these have variations depending on the severity of the earthquake. After an earthquake, when the dry qi underground becomes violently pressing and heat transforms into fire and emerges, the earthquake stops.
The Sea
Question: The waters of a hundred rivers converge in the sea. The sea floor also has openings and cavities that rotate and move to become spring channels. This is the perpetual rotation of continuous generation. If this were not so, the sea would only receive the waters, and could it become full in hundreds of thousands of years?
Answer: Among heaven, earth, and all things, if there is birth there must be death, if there is growth there must be decay—this is the natural principle. The ancients called qian and kun "creation and transformation." If there were creation without transformation, the great void would become completely full. If there were transformation without creation, the great mass would also disappear. This is true for all things. Would water alone revolve to create continuous generation?
The Tuxiang Jibiao states: The void cavities in the earth are extremely numerous, and they are all places where water-qi, fire-qi, and void operate. Void-qi, water, and fire all connect with each other without boundary, and are able to transform into each other. The qi in the earth connects with water, and water follows wherever the qi goes. The nature of earth is fundamentally cold; when qi encounters this coldness, it also transforms into water. Therefore, underground is all water. Water governs descent and floats on the earth, while fire governs ascent and is born from the earth.
