丈ばかりの長さで雷のような音がする。なぜ天が開き天が裂けることが、昼には見えずに、ただ夜にだけ見えるのであろうか。
日中は太陽の光が全天に満ち溢れているときは、このような現象は見えない。夜間の静寂な時には、このような現象が現れる。これは彗星や雷電と同じ原理である。また昼間に兵馬や戈戟が空を行くのを見ることや、楼台宮室が森然と立っているのを見ることもある。これは日光が湿雲に遮られ、湿雲が上では日光を受け、下では地の影を吸うために、このような現象が起こる。もし水面に倒立して映せば、蜃気楼の類がこれである。しかし冬の間は気が収斂し火が弱いときには、このような現象は現れない。また星は地球より数十倍大きいものでも、人が見るのはただ一点に過ぎない。それなのに楼閣や人物がこのように遠くにあるものを、人が見ることができるであろうか。

Therefore it floats motionlessly in space without falling. The earth rotates while heaven revolves. It is like a boat moving while the shore appears to move. The shore does not actually move - it is truly the boat that moves.
