The superintendent (別当) and shrine officials (所司) return to their seats, and the cup is next passed to the superintendent, circulating in the same order as before. Then comes the third offering (三献): one cup (same as the first, but with a newly prepared earthenware cup placed three times on a three-legged tray). Sacred sake (clear sake, 清酒). At this time, side dishes are served (five varieties, from the sacred shelf [御棚]; this marks a withdrawal [御退き], and the upper meal service staff [上膳方] attend to this). Again, as before, beginning from the senior deputy administrator, the cup is circulated in order, and when the round is completed, individual cups (one earthenware cup per round, three times) are presented to each person (this is the duty of the shrine attendants [神人]). Furthermore, the cups are circulated several more times (both clear sake and unfiltered sake are used). All of the above items used in the sake hall are prepared and presented by the deputy administrator. The superintendent's staff (上膳方) oversees and directs the proceedings from the first offering onward. (However, this applies after the head persons have completed the stone-platform foot archery [石壇歩射] and returned to their seats at the administrative hall [庁座].) Rising from their seats, they exit from the south entrance of the sake hall, put on their sandals, and perform the hand-washing ritual (water is placed in a wooden ladle [楾], attended to by the person in the suō robe). Next, the superintendent presents the prayer roll (巻数, one branch), which the senior deputy administrator receives and carries. The procession then moves in a stately walk westward along the eaves of the sake hall. (At this time, two shrine attendants [神人] carry pine torches [松明], while the yatone [矢刀祢] carries the viewing box [覧箱] and leads the way; the rest proceed as before.) The procession stops at the southwestern corner post (facing north), and after a single bow toward the Nara Shrine (奈良社), continues in a stately walk northward along the western eaves of the sake hall, then heads east, proceeding slowly northward along the western eaves of the earthen corridor (土廊), and then to the eaves of the administrative hall (庁屋). From there, one proceeds slowly westward, ascends from the stone platform (石壇), and takes a seat at the outer veranda (落縁), facing east. The head persons' personal names (実名) are then recorded on the appointment documents (差符). (First, the sandal bow [沓揖] and seated bow [座揖] are performed as usual. Next, one bows diagonally toward the shrine official (社司). The shrine official bows in return. Then the viewing box is taken and placed on the round cushion (円座) in front. Next, the fan is placed on the round cushion to the left. The appointment documents (差符) are taken from the viewing box and placed on top of the fan. Looking inside the viewing box, the lid-tray (片木) is removed, stacked beneath the inkstone, and water is poured into the inkstone. Then the ink stick is taken and ground. The pair of brushes is taken with the right hand, transferred to the left, and while holding both together, the cap of one is slightly removed and it is wiped clean; only the brush to be used is kept out, while the caps of the remaining brushes are replaced and returned to their original position. The brush to be used has its cap removed, is dipped in ink, and placed on the wooden tray. Next, the folded paper (折紙) on which the names of the purification head persons [精進頭人] are to be written is propped up inside the viewing box on the far side, so as not to be visible to others. Then the appointment documents placed on the round cushion to the left are picked up. At this time, the left knee is raised and the documents are unfolded. First, the documents for the upper rank [上重], foot archery [歩射], and hand-turn [手番] positions are reviewed, then folded back in thirds with the reverse side facing out. Note: at this location, the full protocol would require writing in all the names of those appearing before the incumbent official (当職見参), but much of this is now abbreviated; the names are written in advance at the private residence (里亭), and so here one simply reviews them briefly before turning them over. Next, from the first head person (一頭人) to the fifth head person (五頭人), following the order of the villages (郷次), their personal names are written on the appointment documents for the archery heads (歩射頭), and after reviewing the documents from beginning to end, they are turned over to the reverse side.) [Annotation slip affixed in the upper margin of line 13:] The annotation slip states: When ascending the stone platform, lead with the left foot, and perform the sandal bow (沓揖) while on top of the stone platform.
