Entering through the Sakura Gate via the Tama Bridge, one takes a seat on the north side, upper-west position beneath the gate. The direct feast (naorai) with offerings, confections, and such is also held at this location. The sealed offerings (go-fū) are measured here as well. At this time, the shoshi (shrine administrator) oversees the proceedings. Paper is brought out and the sealed offerings are ceremonially celebrated. Afterward, proceeding again from the Tama Bridge, one visits the shrines at Iwamoto, Sawada, and Nara, then departs. Torches are received by the middle-ranking attendants (chūgen) from the torch official (matsu-gyōji), and the road is illuminated. Meireki 3 (Hinoto-Tori/1657), New Year's Day: Six officials in full court dress (sokutai) attend together, and the Imiko also participates. Tsuchiya takes a seat. The ceremonies, yin-yang purification rites, and so forth proceed as customary. The sanctuary doors are opened; the inner sanctuary offerings are presented, while in the outer sanctuary the two Gongi officials make their presentations. The direct feast (naorai) is held at the chōya (administrative hall). The dog's ritual portion consists of thirty-two cups. Two small offering trays (ko-oshiki), two round mirror-shaped rice cakes (wa no mi-kagami), and two covered jars — all of these are placed on offering trays lined with paper. In total, twelve offering trays and twelve tall stands (takatsuki) are brought by Taguchi. At this time, the head priest (kannagi) gives Taguchi one formal fan (suehiro) as a gift. Taguchi's offering place is the Kugyo-sho (imperial offering hall). Celebration is made with rice cakes and sake. Sea bream (two pieces) and flying fish (eight pieces) are brought in a wooden box (mi-bitsu). The first-day offering text (ichinichi kumo-fumi) is also brought. Celebration with rice cakes follows. A naorai feast is held at the chōya. After the food has been served, a celebration with futo-mochi rice cakes takes place at the main hall seats, with the head priest, the Hafuri, the Shō-Negi, and the Gon-Negi — four persons in total. The Gon-Hafuri does not attend and celebrates at his own seat. However, the proper procedure for the Gon-Hafuri's proxy is unclear. Thereafter, departing from the chōya seats, a Shihō-hai (Four Directions Worship) ceremony is held beneath the elm tree in front of the Second Torii gate. The Negi stand to the west of the path, and the Hafuri to the east. The order of worship corresponds to the current year's auspicious direction. Since this is the year Hinoto-Tori (a yin year), the Negi side performs the first bow. In yang years, the Hafuri side performs the first bow. A pheasant (one bird) is carried by the head priest's middle-ranking attendant to the shrine, where it is called "Great Carp" (ōgoi) and handed over to the bettō (administrative official). It is placed in a wooden box and offered to the inner sanctuary, after which... (continues on next page)
