(Third Month, Third Day: Go-Sekku Seasonal Festival, continued)
The chrysanthemums from the ninth month and other items are likewise to remain in place until the Great Cleaning in the eleventh month. Today's naorai (post-ritual feast) is held at the Chōya (administrative hall), and it continues through the evening's offering of food.
[Personal Note]
At the time of the Earth-Release Festival (Toki-e Matsuri) on the twentieth day of the second month, the opening of the sacred key is the duty of the Gon-Hafuri (Acting Subordinate Priest). Because (the Gon-Hafuri) did not open it, Yasunori attended and opened it himself.
This month is a long month (with 30 days). Therefore, on the twenty-seventh day, there is the Sacred Deity Festival (Mikami-matsuri) at Kibune (Kifune) Shrine, and notification concerning the purification garments (jōe) and lot-drawing (kuji) comes from the Main Shrine (moto).
On the twenty-ninth day, the hirate-tsuki ceremony is held at the long-house (nagaya). It is usually conducted by the head priest.

**Fourth Month, First Day: Divine Festival and Nusa Offering (Hōhei)**
Nine nusa (wand offerings) are prepared. This is something the head priest attends to, and the implements on the offering shelf are always to be arranged and set out in this manner. Regarding the places where the nusa are offered:
- At the Main Shrine: two nusa, carried together as one
- At the Gonden (Temporary Shrine): same as the Main Shrine, two nusa
- At the Suzuka Shrine: one nusa
- Up to the Kuro-o Shrine behind the Main Shrine: one nusa (there is no shrine structure, only a stone enclosure)
- At the Ushi-ichi Hall: one nusa (one does not descend to the front of Ushi-ichi; the offering is made from above)
- At Futasu-yashiro (the Two-Shrine complex): one nusa (the Two-Shrine complex consists of Hayashida Shrine on one side and the shrine called Kisaichi on the other)
- Going all the way to the back, one nusa at the Main Katsura Shrine
Total: nine nusa as listed above. It is suspicious that there is no nusa offering today for the two official shrines at Kibune. This seems to be a matter only for the head priest — it is something that should be inquired about.
The long chest (nagabitsu) for the divine food offerings contains seven units (gō); one pole-load (sao) for the inner-rear section; four okuho-te (inner supplementary offerings). These are also prepared at the Chōya.
The Head Priest (Yasunori), the Negi (Chikugo, Shigetsugu), and the Hafuri (Takumi-no-suke Haruhisa) dismount their horses at the Ichihara Torii gate. From there, they make three circuits of Kibune Shrine, as is customary. First, the nusa offering is made at the Main Shrine, next at the Gonden, then at Suzuka (Shrine), then at Kuro-o (which is behind the Main Shrine; though another account says that the Kuro-o Shrine is beneath a large tree above Ushi-ichi — this should be inquired about), then at Ushi-ichi Shrine, then they proceed to the valley lodging (tani no shuku).
The two shrine officials wear sokutai (full court dress) with summer robes (kahō). The head priest wears ikan (informal court dress) with a winter robe (tōhō).
First, they take their seats in the haiden (oratory). The Azukari-dayū (senior custodian) passes the sacred key. However, it is said that this key is held in the custody of the daikan-shū (deputy officials). The Hafuri receives the sacred key and proceeds toward the divine presence. At this point, the left and right komainu (guardian lion-dogs) are to first be moved approximately five or six sun (approximately 15–18 cm) backward. This is because the two offering stands (kudai-ban) in the outer sanctuary (gejin) leave no space, and so on.
Next, the attached bird (tsuketori — an ornamental bird figure symbolizing the deity's messenger) is to be hung on the upper nageshi (wall beam) to the right side of the deity. Then the sanctuary doors are opened and one enters the inner sanctuary (naijin) of both shrines. The bowing (yū) and other procedures follow the usual custom, identical to those at the present shrine (Shimogamo).
First, all the horizontal items (yoko no mono — laterally arranged offerings) are placed entirely within the inner sanctuary. The contents of the second chest are offered in the outer sanctuary (gejin). The okubo-te (deep trough offerings) number two in the inner sanctuary and two in the outer sanctuary (though those in the inner sanctuary are not visible, they follow the same arrangement as those in the outer sanctuary). This is to be kept strictly secret.
First, the okubo-te are placed to the right and left as shown in the diagram.
