[Continued from the previous page] …proceed to the Hafuri-ya (ritualists' hall). From the Hafuri-ya, each person exits to the east, descends, and the shrine circuit (miya-meguri) takes place — this is the Grand Shrine Circuit (ō-miya-meguri). The purification sweeping ceremony is now concluded. From this point, the participants are received at the Second Torii Gate, and the Divine Procession (o-shinkō) formally begins. 《Marginal note: The Ceremony of the Divine Procession (Shinkō no gi)》 Item: First, proceeding directly from the Second Torii Gate to the O-ibe-dokoro (the sacred birth-place sanctuary). In front of the sacred enclosure (o-kakoi), facing west on the east side, with north as the place of honor, seating is arranged on the long floor (naga-toko). Before taking their seats, the participants prostrate themselves before the divine presence. Upon being seated, the bettō (chief administrator) and shoshi (administrative official) bring the aoi (hollyhock) and each person hangs it from the kōshi (the topknot-mount) of their court cap (kanmuri). Next, just as each person is holding the nusa (wand offering) they have brought, the jinin (shrine attendants) bring one additional nusa each for everyone to hold. Holding two nusa and a shaku (ceremonial baton) together, the participants stand, perform two prostrations, shake the nusa, and then sit and recite the norito (ritual prayers). The jinin then receive the two nusa. Thereafter, the o-sonaemono (sacred offerings) are passed through in a sacred chest (o-hitsu), and each person receives them by holding them up to their head with both hands. After the sacred sake (o-miki) has passed, the jinin come forward and tear up the nusa and the shide (zigzag paper streamers) into pieces, place them into the o-hitsu, and bring them forth. Beginning with the head priest, each person in order takes approximately fifteen torn pieces — since the exact number is difficult to ascertain, roughly twenty pieces are taken. At this point, the jinin bring five sakaki (sacred evergreen) branches, one person carrying one branch each, five people in all. Each of the five senior officials (gokan) attaches the torn nusa pieces to each sakaki branch, three places per branch. All five branches receive attachments in this manner. The innermost one is for the deity of Tanao Shrine — the beginning of Konohanasakuya-hime — and so forth. The next is for the lower Kawai Shrine, and so forth. Then Kataoka-dono, then Kibune-dono, then the Ujigami-dono — five branches in total, and so forth. The attaching of the torn shide is done by five people, three locations each, totaling fifteen places. After the attachment is complete, five jinin, each holding one branch aloft, circle the front of the sacred enclosure three times. Then, the bettō-dayū who serves as the song officiant (utagaku) strikes the wooden clappers (hyōshigi), signaling the divine procession toward the main shrine hall (o-den). The six individuals — the five senior officials and the shamu-dai (shrine affairs representative) — follow slightly behind, having torchbearers carry torches, and proceed toward the main hall. Around the time the o-sakaki are carried as far as the Hinoki-mon (Sun Gate), the bettō turns back and proceeds to meet the procession at the north bridge of the Inui-mon (Northwestern Gate) of the main hall        (Marginal note: Below the azukari-beya [the custodians' room]) From there, all seven persons enter together through the West Gate. Next, the first and second sakaki are set upright to the left and right of the Tanao Shrine. The third, fourth, and fifth are set upright in a triangular arrangement on the lawn to the southeast (tatsumi) of the o-sho-ya (main shrine building). Then the inner doors are opened, the aoi offerings are presented, and the norito is recited. The head priest proceeds from the corridor to the Hafuri-ya.
