[Continued from the previous page] The doors are closed and the procession proceeds to the Hafuri-ya (ritualists' hall). From there, they circuit as far as Kataoka-dono, then from the Tama-bashi (jewel bridge) take their seats below the Rōmon (two-storied gate). 《Marginal note: West as upper seat, facing north》 The shoshi (administrative official) and bettō (chief administrator) then bring aoi (hollyhock) and have it hung from the kōshi (topknot-mount) of each person's cap. They then withdraw (descend). The shamu-dai (shrine affairs representative) performs the shrine circuit as far as Ōta. 22nd Day: Today, the hinomono-shi (box craftsmen) brought twenty lacquered boxes (o-hitsu) of 2-sun 5-bu size to the head priest. 23rd Day: On behalf of the head priest (kannushi-dai), aoi offerings are presented to a total of eleven recipients: the Imperial Palace (Kinri), the Retired Emperor's Palace (Sentō), the New Retired Emperor (Shin'in), the Empress/Imperial Lady (Nyoin), the O-sama (an imperial consort), the Young Prince (Wakamiya-sama), Nagahashi-dono, Ohasu-dono, the New Middle Counselor (Shin-chūnagon-dono), and the shrine's court liaison (tōsha densō) — eleven locations in all. The stand (dai) measures 1 shaku 4 sun wide by 7 sun deep, with a 6-bu rim and 5-sun legs in double-kuri-ashi (curved-leg) style. For the o-shū (the imperial attendants' group), only the height of the legs differs, being 4-sun legs. For the various o-tokoro-sama (noble households), eight bundles (kusari) of aoi are provided, with four bundles remaining for others. Two high stands (taka-tsuki) each — the o-hitsu received from the box craftsmen (yesterday) are placed upon the taka-tsuki, with aoi and katsura (Japanese Judas tree) placed on top. The messenger consists of one shoshi-dayū and one tonnei (shrine official), dressed in white robes, accompanying the shoshi. The shoshi-dayū wears a hunting robe (karigoromo) or a suō (direct-hanging robe, hitare). 24th Day: At dusk, the jinin (shrine attendants) summon the procession, announcing three times. The participants are dressed in formal court attire (sokutai) and are seated at the Tsuchiya (earthen hall). The hōri (ritualist) is seated at the Chōya (administrative hall) and accompanies the rear of the procession. The aoi offering is also presented today. When the procession passes before the Tsuchiya, each person prostrates themselves as is customary. At the Tama-bashi, a purification (harae) is performed as is customary. The procession arrives at the corridor of the Onmyōji (yin-yang master) and the Imiko (sacred child attendant) comes forward. The inner doors are opened, and the procedure for the divine offerings proceeds as customary. In the outer sanctuary (gaijin), with both sets of offerings in attendance, the morning daily offering (nikkū) is also presented. The doors are closed, and the shrine circuit is conducted as far as Kataoka-dono, after which the procession again takes seats at the Tsuchiya. At that moment, the two officials — shoshi and bettō — come forward and announce: "Head Priest and Ritualist, please rise." At this, the participants ascend to the Hashi-dono (bridge hall) while still wearing their shoes (kutsu). The bettō holds the train of the head priest's robe, while the shoshi holds that of the ritualist. Torches are held upright by jinin on the side bridges (waki-bashi) to left and right. Passing through the Hashi-dono, both officials (the head priest and ritualist) stand facing north at the center of the Tama-bashi. At this point, the shoshi and bettō place upon them the hitai-ate (forehead cover) and yū-tasuki (mulberry-fiber shoulder cord) 《Marginal note: made of wisteria》. The two officials then cross from the western side bridge of the Hashi-dono (going southward) and ascend the Hashi-dono again from the south, standing side by side approximately one bay (i.e., one ken) north of the center of the Hashi-dono.
