**(Ninth Month, Eighth Day: Sumō Uchitori Ritual, continued)**
(The kami-nin)came to receive(their allotment), and one bundle of elbow-cotton(hiji-wata)was handed to them. Five persons《marginal note: the go-kan, the Five Officials》wore tsuchiya garments. Other attire was at each individual's discretion.
Nine bouts of sumō were held, divided into west and east sides, and the matches took place before the Hosodono (a long, narrow hall within the shrine precinct). The Matsu-gyōji (Pine Officiants) supervised the proceedings. Torches were set up to the east and west of the Hashidono (bridge hall), and kami-nin stood to the left and right of the sandy wrestling ground. When the sumō was finished, the sacred offerings were placed in offering boxes (o-hitsu) and carried through by the kami-nin.
After the naorai (post-ritual communal meal) of the Five Officials concluded, all ujibito (clan members/parishioners) who had come to worship also participated in the naorai without exception. There was no "latter portion" (go-i) three-sun offering.
When the proceedings concluded, everyone withdrew and took their seats in the chōya (administrative hall). One of the hōri (celebrants) sat in the main hall facing east, the head priest sat in the yokoza (side seat), and the rest sat as customary. The items passed at the naorai were, first: hana-bira (flower-petal-shaped rice cakes)《marginal note: one piece, placed on a small corner board》, flying fish (tobiuo)《marginal note: one piece》, millet《marginal note: eight pieces skewered on a stick》, and persimmon《marginal note: seven pieces skewered on a stick》— each skewered equally and passed around. After that, unrefined sake (nigorizake) was passed several times. Lamps《marginal note: oil vessels, five in total》: five on the south side, one on the north.
On this day, a temporary sacred enclosure (o-kariya) was constructed within the Hosodono. Bamboo blinds (misu) were hung on all four sides, and a temporary curtained enclosure (agébari) was erected, one on each side, to the east and west of the garden before the Hosodono. The western enclosure faced east, and the eastern enclosure faced south.《marginal note: As to which direction they should face, this is a matter to be inquired about again.》

**Ninth Day of the Ninth Month**
Early in the morning, worship was performed《marginal note: three times》. Participants wore formal sokutai court dress and tsuchiya garments and took their seats. Among the Five Officials, the hōri (celebrant) took his seat in the chōya. The sha-mu-dai (shrine affairs deputy) also wore tsuchiya. Four persons in total. The shō-hōri (chief celebrant) brought chrysanthemums from the chōya and proceeded together with the offering procession. Near the Tama-bashi (Jewel Bridge), the purification by the onmyōji (diviner/yin-yang master) was completed, and the sacred door (mi-to) was opened. The procedures for arranging and presenting the sacred offerings were as customary.
