**Last Day of the Sixth Month: Harae (Purification) Ritual (O-Todai-e)** After the kami-nin (shrine attendants) had performed their three rounds of worship, participants dressed in court robes (ikan) and tsuchiyas (a type of outer garment). The passing of the sacred offerings (o-sonae) was permitted only to the negi (priests' side). No cooked rice was included. Six mackerel, three chests of surume (dried squid; one of which was wrapped confections), plus two varieties of plants — shaga (Iris japonica) and nakikusa (a type of aromatic herb, possibly iris or calamus) — were placed to the left and right. The ritual procedures of chopsticks, sacred sake, the sacred wiping cloth (o-nugui), and the bow-salutation (haiyū) were carried out as customary. The circuit of the shrine grounds, proceeding to the Nara Shrine, was completed as per custom. This marks the commencement of the Aranikitae no Harae (the "Rough-and-Gentle Purification" ceremony). At the purification site before the Second Torii gate, on the lower road to the west, a temporary curtained enclosure (agébari/aku) was erected. The head priest took his position in the center of the enclosure 《marginal note: entering from the north, facing south》, with the shō-negi (chief negi) and the shō-hōri (chief celebrant) seated to the left and right respectively. The negi was placed on the west side and the hōri on the east side. All others were positioned to the southwest. The kami-nin brought grass-made effigies (katashiro) 《marginal note: in human form》, and each person took one 《marginal note: taking one for each member of their household》. Next, offerings 《marginal note: fish only》 and sacred sake were passed around. Following this, the Onmyōryō (Bureau of Yin-Yang/Divination) brought hemp leaves, with which each person performed a sweeping purification gesture. The Onmyōryō then brought a chinowa (a ring of cogon grass), through which each person passed three times. When the ceremony was concluded, everyone rose from their seats and proceeded to the chōya (administrative hall). The morning sun offerings (asahi no tomo) were presented, but there was no naorai (post-ritual feast). The nakikusa was brought by the Kawa-bugyō (River Magistrate), along with small fish (zako), ayu (sweetfish), and fried/roasted items (irimono), which were passed around. Everyone then withdrew. **First Day of the Seventh Month:** The daily offering (nisshi-ku) was conducted as per custom. **Third Day (of the same month):** Yata no Tayū came together with the bettō (temple administrator) to make a farewell visit (itomagoi), and then departed. **Seventh Day of the Seventh Month (O-to Opening Ceremony)** In the morning, participants wore formal court dress (sokutai) and tsuchiya garments. Offerings were arranged and presented; the bow-salutation rituals were carried out as per custom. Of the four offering boxes (o-hitsu): one contained flying fish (tobiuo), one contained kiburi (a kind of dried or prepared food), one contained confections (o-kashi), and one contained kakizuki (a type of offering food). From the hōri's (celebrant's) side: cooked rice, sōmen, and soup containing dried deer with yuzu were also provided. The daily offerings were arranged and presented by the gon-negi (assistant negi) and hōri. Each person held a naorai (post-ritual communal meal) at the chōya. The dried deer in sōmen soup was handed over by the bettō in the corridor, to be shared between the head priest and the shō-hōri. **First Day of the Eighth Month:** The ko-moshiro (junior land steward/representative) brought one to (approx. 18 liters) of rice 《marginal note: plus half a shō》, and was given sake as a gift of celebration. On this day: the head priest received one to; the shō-negi received 《five shō》; the bettō received 《one to》; the moshiro received eight shō. The remainder was to be measured and distributed to the Ochita-bugyō (Fallen Field Magistrate) and others accordingly. **29th Day (of the same month):** Two to of rice from the Yatone (an administrative post or place-name) were brought in and stored 《marginal note: said to be called the "Sanahori-sen" (lit. "field-gleaning fee")》. The shō-negi received one to, it is said. This represents the accumulated amount reckoned from the first day of the sixth month through the end of the eighth month. **Eighth Day of the Ninth Month: Sumō Uchitori Ritual (Sumo Inner-Taking Ceremony)** After completing the three rounds of worship 《marginal note: performed/reported three times》, one bundle of chrysanthemum cotton (kikuwata) was (received by) the kami-nin.
