英語訳

**[Right folio]** [Continued from the previous folio:] In order to dispel [the strange occurrences of heavenly anomalies and earthquakes], a general amnesty (*taisha*) and other measures were proclaimed throughout the realm. The above is based on the *Nihon Kiryaku*. (The year and month of the earthquake have not yet been verified.) During the reign of Emperor Go-Suzaku, on the eighth day of the ninth month of the first year of Chōkyū (1040 CE), there was a great earthquake at the Hour of the Tiger (around 4 a.m.). On the first day of the eleventh month of the same year, the same occurred during the night. ○ On the twentieth day of the seventh month of the second year of the same era (1041 CE), at the Hour of the Ox (around 2 a.m.), the same [great earthquake occurred]. During the reign of Emperor Go-Reizei, on the eighteenth day of the sixth month of the third year of Kōhei (1060 CE), the same [kind of earthquake] occurred, accompanied by rumbling. ○ On the sixth day of the fifth month of the fourth year of the same era (1061 CE), at the Hour of the Ox, there was an earthquake; crows flocked together in alarm and cried out. On the seventh day, at the Hour of the Snake (around 10 a.m.), the earth shook again. On the eighth day, an imperial pardon was granted (criminals were pardoned and gifts were given to the elderly) — this was due to the earthquake. On the seventh day of the fifth month of the first year of Jiryaku (1065 CE), the earth shook greatly. During the reign of Emperor Go-Sanjō, on the twentieth day of the tenth month of the second year of Enkyū (1070 CE), the earth shook in the middle of the night. Houses and earthen walls throughout the capital frequently collapsed, the great bell of Tōdaiji was shaken down, and temples and pagodas in various provinces were frequently damaged. On the twenty-third day of the same month, the earth shook again from time to time. During the reign of Emperor Horikawa, on the seventh day of the eighth month of the fifth year of Kanji (1091 CE), there was a great earthquake at the Hour of the Monkey (around 4 p.m.). At the Gōdaidō (Hall of the Five Great Wisdom Kings) of Hōjōji, the statue of Gundari Myōō (*Kundali-vidyārāja*) — which was one *jōroku* in height — was shaken down and collapsed. The *ruisei* (finial) of the nine-storied pagoda tilted, the principal images and ornaments of the Kondō (Golden Hall) and Kōdō (Lecture Hall) were damaged, and the Jōgyōdō (Constant Practice Hall) was severely damaged. Furthermore, the sacred treasure hall (*hōden*) of Zaō Gongen at Kinpusen in Yamato Province was also shaken and damaged. It was said that nothing like it had ever been heard of in ancient or modern times. ○ On the tenth day of the eleventh month of the sixth year of the same era (1092 CE), at the Hour of the Dog (around 8 p.m.), the earth shook and rumbled greatly, and dogs gathered together in alarm and howled. **[Left folio]** ○ On the fourteenth day of the second month of the seventh year of the same era (1093 CE), at the Hour of the Goat (around 2 p.m.), the earth shook and rumbled greatly, and monks and laypeople alike were frightened and descended into their gardens. The above is based on the *Fusō Ryakki*. On the seventeenth day of the twelfth month of the third year of Kahō (1096 CE), the era name was changed to Eichō. This was on account of heavenly anomalies and earthquakes. On the twenty-first day of the eleventh month of the second year of Eichō (1097 CE), [the era name was changed] to Jōtoku. This was on account of heavenly anomalies, earthquakes, and flooding. On the twenty-eighth day of the eighth month of the third year of Jōtoku (1099 CE), [the era name was changed] to Kōwa. This was on account of earthquakes and epidemic disease. The above is based on the *Kōdaiki*. (The months and days of the latter two [era changes] are not yet certain.) During the reign of Emperor Go-Toba, on the ninth day of the seventh month of the first year of Bunji (1185 CE), there was a great earthquake in Kyoto at the Hour of the Horse (around noon). The Tokuchōjuin, Rengōōin (Sanjūsangendō), Saishōkōin, and other Buddhist halls were destroyed; the ridgepole of the palace at Kan'in was broken; and the buildings from the kitchen and below were somewhat damaged. However, it was remarkable that the residence of Kurō Hōgan Minamoto no Yoshitsune at Rokujō Muromachi suffered not the slightest damage or tilting. Among all the halls and pagodas near and far, not one was left intact; there were also those who were crushed to death. The aftershocks continued without pause for some time: there was not a day without twenty or thirty tremors strong enough to startle one, and after ten or twenty days the shaking gradually became less frequent, finally dying down after about three months. The above is based on the *Azuma Kagami* and the *Hōjōki*. During the reign of Emperor Juntoku, on the twenty-first day of the fifth month of the first year of Kenpō (1213 CE), there was a great earthquake in Kamakura, and halls and shrines were broken and collapsed. ○ On the twenty-first day of the eighth month of the third year of the same era (1215 CE), at the Hour of the Snake, [heron/*sagi*...] [Continues on the next folio]
