現代語訳

郭や諸官庁が壊れて倒れ、京中の家屋が非常に多く倒壊した。八省院、豊楽院、東寺、西寺、極楽寺、清水寺、円覚寺などが転倒した。未曽有の地震という。天皇と中宮は御庭に幕を張って御座所とされた。清水寺では僧俗合わせて圧死した者が五十人。翌十九日は十四回震動し、左衛門府の陣の後庁、堀川院の廊下、閑院の西の対屋、民部省の建物三棟が倒れた。天皇が堀川太政大臣兼家公の邸宅に行幸されるため、数百人の大工に修理させていた時、四面の築垣が突然倒れて大工三十人余りが打ち殺され、うち十八人を掘り出した。御読経の僧の児童たちが圧殺され、崇福寺の法華堂南方が崩れて谷底に落ち、堂守の僧千聖が死に、鐘突堂が転倒した。弥勒堂では大石が落ちて北西の角を壊した。また近江国分寺では大門が倒れて二王像が砕け、国府の庁舎三十棟余りが転倒し、関寺の大仏は腰より上が砕けて失われた。二十日は十一回、二十一日は十三回、二十二日は十二回、二十三日は十回、二十六日は八回、二十九日は五回、晦日は八回、七月十一日は六回、十二日は四回地震があった。この災害によってこれまでの天延(四年)の年号を貞元と改めた(罪人を許すなど例の通り)。しかしなお余震は止まず、十四日は二回揺れ、十八日・二十日は大きく揺れ、二十一日は三回、二十三日まで絶えず震えていた。同年九月二十三日、また地が大きく震え響きが甚だしかった。十月十一日、諸社に神宝を奉納させて御祈祷があった。以上『日本紀略』『扶桑略記』。○同二年二月四日巳刻に地震。九日巳時に地が大きく震えた。《花山天皇》《貞観》二年十一月八日地が大きく震えた。《一条天皇》《正暦》五年十月二十四日同前、御占いがあった。《三条天皇》《長和》四年十一月六日、地が大きく震えた。以上『日本紀略』。《後一条天皇》《治安》二年同前。○《万寿》元年三月十一日戌刻地震、十八日卯刻にまた震動した。『扶桑略記』同二年十二月地震、大雪。○同四年三月二日申時大地震。《長元》五年三月五日天変地震の怪異。

The palace compounds and various government offices collapsed and fell, and a great many residences in the capital were destroyed. The Eight Ministries compound, Burakuin, Tōji, Saiji, Gokurakuji, Kiyomizudera, Engakuji and others toppled over. This was called an unprecedented earthquake. The Emperor and Empress set up curtains in the imperial garden as their temporary residence. At Kiyomizudera, fifty monks and laypeople were crushed to death. On the following 19th day, there were fourteen tremors, and the rear office of the Left Gate Guards, corridors of Horikawa-in, the western pavilion of Kan-in, and three buildings of the Ministry of Popular Affairs collapsed. When the Emperor had several hundred carpenters repair Horikawa Minister of the Left Kaneke's residence for an imperial visit, the earthen walls on all four sides suddenly collapsed, killing over thirty carpenters, of whom eighteen were dug out. Child attendants of sutra-chanting monks were crushed to death. The Lotus Hall on the south side of Sōfukuji collapsed into the valley bottom, and the temple-keeper monk Senshō died. The bell tower toppled over. At Miroku Hall, large stones fell and destroyed the northwest corner. Also, at Ōmi Kokubun-ji, the main gate collapsed and the Niō statues were broken, over thirty buildings of the provincial government office toppled, and the great Buddha statue at Sekidera broke and was lost from the waist up. On the 20th there were eleven tremors, on the 21st thirteen, on the 22nd twelve, on the 23rd ten, on the 26th eight, on the 29th five, on the last day of the month eight, on the 11th of the 7th month six, and on the 12th four earthquakes occurred. Due to this disaster, the era name was changed from Ten'en (4th year) to Jōgen (pardoning criminals and other customary measures were taken). However, aftershocks still did not cease - on the 14th there were two tremors, on the 18th and 20th there were major tremors, on the 21st three times, and until the 23rd there was continuous shaking. On the 23rd of the 9th month of the same year, the earth shook greatly again with tremendous noise.
