花を開く。筒は浅紫色で、五弁の末は深紫色。外皮は
黄色で細かい紫の縦筋があり、茎と同じである。内部に黄色の玉蕊（まるいしべ）がある。一花の状態は大まかに紅毛煙管（オランダキセル）
の頭に似ている。故にキセル草の名がある。また白花のものもある。形
状の相似するものを左に挙げる。
赤箭《本草綱目：根の名は天麻》平原及び水辺、竹林中に生育する。夏、単独の茎を発
し、四、五尺に至り、節々に苞があって葉はない。茎の先端に花を開き、
穂を成す。形は列當（ハマウツボ）のようである。花茎ともに淡黄赤色を帯びる。
その根は大きな塊で、横に生えて髭根はなく、形は人の足のようである。
ユウレイタケ《漢名：未詳》深山の陰地に夏生育する。高さ五、六寸。節々に

苞があって葉はなく、茎の先端に一花を開く。茎・葉ともに白色である。また一種で
同じ形で花が集まって開くものもある。

本草綱目集解に云う「保昇曰く、原州・秦渭・渭州・霊州皆これありて、暮春に苗を抽き、四月中旬に採取す。長さ五六寸から一尺以来。茎は円く白色。採取して扁平に圧し、日干しする。蘇頌曰く、草蓯蓉の根は肉蓯蓉と極めて相類す。花を刮り去り、扁平に圧して肉に代える者は、功力は殊に劣る。即ち列當なり。」

It opens flowers. The tube is light purple, with the tips of the five petals being deep purple. The outer skin is
yellow with fine purple vertical stripes, same as the stem. Inside there are yellow round stamens. The appearance of one flower roughly resembles the head of a Dutch pipe
(Monotropa hypopitys). Hence it has the name kiseru-sō (pipe grass). There are also white-flowered varieties. Similar-shaped
plants are listed on the left.

Gastrodia elata 《Bencao Gangmu: root name is tianma》 grows in plains, waterside areas, and bamboo groves. In summer, it sends up a single stem
reaching four to five shaku in height, with bracts at each node but no leaves. It opens flowers at the stem tip,
forming spikes. Its shape is like Orobanche. Both flower and stem have a pale yellow-red tinge.
Its root is a large bulb that grows horizontally without fibrous roots, shaped like a human foot.

Yūreitake 《Chinese name: unknown》 grows in summer in deep mountain shade. Height is five to six sun. At each node there are

bracts but no leaves, and it opens a single flower at the stem tip. Both stem and leaves are white. There is also one variety
of the same shape where flowers cluster and bloom together.

The Bencao Gangmu anthology states: "Baosheng said: Yuanzhou, Qinwei, Weizhou, and Lingzhou all have this plant. In late spring it sends up shoots, harvested in mid-April. Length from five-six cun to one chi or more. The stem is round and white. After harvesting, it is pressed flat and sun-dried. Su Song said: The root of Cistanche tubulosa is extremely similar to Cistanche deserticola. Those who scrape off the flowers and press them flat to substitute for the fleshy type have distinctly inferior efficacy. This is namely Orobanche."
