此鳥鳥屋ニテ二軒
所持セルヲ真写
鳥賞安子￣ニ曰
実心鳥
此鳥高野山ヨリ出ルト雖未＿二現鳥￣セ＿一
旅人実心鳥ノ皮トテ持来ルヲ見
ルニ杜䳌ノ雌ノ赤斑ニテ余程大キク
勿論俗合モ似タリ其後外方ヨリ
実心ト云ヲ見タルニ先年大坂表
ヨリ伊達烏ト云テ持来ル鳥ナリ
此鳥惣身紺青ノ毛色此角赤
クシテ口ノ内真黄也足赤ク尾羽
黒シ至テ鳥ノ形不気用ナリ実
心鳥ト云テ見タルハ右ノ鳥ナリ其
後九州ヘ渡リ見タルハ雨烏ト云テ
見タリ又其後達磨鳥トテ江戸ヘ
来ルコトアリ程ナク落タリ餌飼鱣
ニテ等分餌玉子ノ黄実（キミ）ヲ入ルヽ也
此鳥ヲ仏法僧ト云人アリ間違也云々
予曰本条ニ記セル者ハ慈悲心鳥
ニアラズ仏法僧ナリ前条ヲ合セ

慈悲心鳥（じひしんどり）
この鳥は鳥屋（とりや）にて二軒所持しているのを写生した。
『鳥賞安子』に曰く、
実心鳥（じっしんどり）について：
この鳥は高野山より出るとはいうものの、いまだ現物を見たことがなかった。ある旅人が「実心鳥の皮だ」と言って持参したものを見てみると、杜鵑（ほととぎす）の雌の赤斑のあるものに似ており、相当大きかった。もちろん、俗称も似通っている。その後、他の地方から「実心」と称するものを見たところ、先年大坂から「伊達烏（だてがらす）」と呼ばれて持ってきた鳥であった。この鳥は全身が紺青（こんじょう）の羽色で、この角（つの）は赤く、口の中は真黄色であり、足は赤く、尾羽は黒い。たいへん鳥としての姿が見栄えのしないものである。「実心鳥」と言って見せられたのはこの鳥のことである。その後、九州へ渡って見たところ「雨烏（あまがらす）」と呼ばれているものとして見た。またその後、「達磨鳥（だるまどり）」として江戸へ来たことがある。程なく死んでしまった。餌は鱣（うなぎ）を等分にして、餌に卵の黄身を混ぜるものである。この鳥を「仏法僧（ぶっぽうそう）」と呼ぶ人があるが、それは間違いである、云々。
私（著者）が申すに、本条に記されている者は慈悲心鳥ではなく、仏法僧（ぶっぽうそう）である。前条と合わせて見るべきである。

Jihishin-dori (Bird of Compassion / Jūichi Cuckoo)
This bird was drawn from life based on specimens held at two bird shops.
According to the "Torishō Anshi" (Bird Appreciation Notes):
On the Jisshin-dori (Earnest-Heart Bird):
Although this bird is said to come from Mount Kōya, I had not yet seen a live specimen. When a traveler brought what they claimed to be the skin of a Jisshin-dori, upon examination it resembled a female hototogisu (Lesser Cuckoo) with reddish spots, and was considerably larger. The colloquial name was, naturally, also similar. Afterward, when I saw what was called a "Jisshin" from another region, it turned out to be the same bird that had been brought from Osaka some years earlier under the name "Date-garasu" (Dandyish Crow). This bird has entirely dark indigo-blue plumage, with red on its crest/horns, a deep yellow interior to its mouth, red feet, and black tail feathers. Its overall form is rather ungainly in appearance. What was shown to me as the "Jisshin-dori" was indeed this bird. Later, when I traveled to Kyushu, I encountered it referred to as "Ama-garasu" (Rain Crow). Still later, it came to Edo under the name "Daruma-dori" (Daruma Bird), but it died before long. Its diet consists of eel (unagi) in equal portions, with egg yolk mixed into its feed. Some people call this bird "Buppōsō" (Broad-billed Roller), but that is a mistake, and so on.
I (the author) note: the bird described in this entry is not the Jihishin-dori but the Buppōsō (Oriental Dollarbird / Broad-billed Roller). This should be read together with the preceding entry.
【Annotator's note in the original: Since this bird is far more brightly colored than the Buppōsō, could it not be, as the name suggests, the Jihishin-dori = Jūichi (Hodgson's Hawk-Cuckoo)?】
