十二日癸丑、鷺が二羽、朝堂院の白虎楼・豊楽院の栖霞楼の上に集まった。陰陽寮が占って言うには、「火災が起きることを慎むべきである」と。十三日申（さる）・寅（とら）の刻に地震があった。鷺が豊楽院の南門の鵄尾（とびのお・棟の飾り）の上に集まった。十四日乙卯の刻に地震があった。十五日丙辰の未の刻に、鷺が豊楽殿の東の鵄尾の上に集まった。（中略）

In the sky, or as people who witnessed it all said, "These are winged ants."
On the 12th day, Kichū (癸丑), two herons gathered on top of the Byakko-rō (White Tiger Tower) of the Chōdō-in (Imperial Audience Hall complex) and the Seika-rō tower of the Buraku-in (豊楽院). The Bureau of Onmyō (Divination) divined and said: "One should be cautious of fire breaking out." On the 13th day, there were earthquakes at the hours of the Monkey and the Tiger. Herons gathered on top of the kite-tail (ridge ornament) of the South Gate of the Buraku-in. On the 14th day, Kinoto-u (乙卯), there was an earthquake during the hour of the Rabbit. On the 15th day, Hinoe-tatsu (丙辰), during the hour of the Sheep, herons gathered atop the eastern kite-tail ornament of the Buraku-den (豊楽殿). (Omitted)
The *Kōtei-ki-shō* (皇帝紀抄, "Excerpts from the Imperial Chronicles") states: On the 9th day of the 7th month of the 1st year of Bunji (1185), during the hour of the Sheep, there was a great earthquake, and the halls, shrines, pagodas, mausoleums, and dwellings in and around the capital (Kyoto) were almost entirely destroyed. [Portion obscured and illegible] After that, [illegible] the anguish within one's heart, the spirit was as if intoxicated, and so on.
In Chōmei's *Hōjōki* (方丈記, "An Account of My Hut"), it is written: Around the 2nd year of Genryaku (1185), a great earthquake occurred in its fullness. Its manner was unlike anything ordinary in the world; mountains collapsed, rivers were buried, and the sea (surged onto land)…
