このような人物を「善者」と呼んでも差し支えないであろう。世の中に金銭を持っている者でも、このような志を持つ人は稀である。たまたま些細な金銭を捨てて人を恵むことがあっても、その姓名を世に明らかにして、自分の徳を誇示しようとする心がある。
先年、米穀が不足して飢饉となり、飢えた民が街中に溢れ横たわっていたとき、ある裕福な家の者が、毎夜粥を炊いて担い桶に入れて担わせながら、橋の上や街頭にいる貧しい人々や乞食に与えたが、あえてその名を明かすことはなかった。前後五十余日の間、一夜もこれを欠かすことがなかったという。これこそが真の陰徳というものであろう。
『五雑俎』にいわく（云々）：「財貨を尽くして権力ある貴人に媚びへつらいながら、少しの金銭を捨てて貧しき者を救おうとはしない。これは天下に共通する迷いである」と。これは和漢・古今を問わず、普通の人間の情として、少しも変わるところがない。これに反して欲が少なく、他人のために計る人は、ただ千人に一、二人あるのみである。

Such a person may rightly be called a "virtuous person." Even among those in the world who possess wealth, those with such genuine intent are rare. On the occasional instances when people give away small sums of money to help others, they tend to publicize their own name and display their virtue with an air of self-promotion.
In a previous year, when rice and grain were scarce and a famine struck, and starving people were scattered throughout the streets in all directions, a certain wealthy household would cook gruel every night, load it into carrying buckets, and have it borne to the poor and the beggars on bridges and street corners — yet they never once revealed their name. For a period of over fifty days in total, they did not miss a single night. Surely this is what true hidden virtue (intoku) means.
As stated in the "Wuzazu" (Five Assorted Offerings): "People exhaust their wealth fawning over the powerful and noble, yet they will not spare even a trifle to save the destitute. This is the common delusion shared throughout the world." This truth holds without the slightest difference across Japanese and Chinese history, ancient times and the present alike, as a characteristic of ordinary human nature. Those who, in contrast to this, have few desires and act with consideration for others number no more than one or two in a thousand.
