## Editorial Notes (Hanrei) ○ This book was originally written to encourage loyalty, filial piety, and righteousness in our descendants, by collecting things seen and heard in recent times, without necessarily vouching for the truth or falsehood of each account. For particularly reliable accounts, even where the addresses and names of individuals are known, they are not recorded here. While this is regrettable, since these concern people who are still alive today, and as there is some cause for hesitation, they are recorded only as "a certain person in the vicinity of a certain town." This is not to implicate those individuals, but merely to describe their conduct and intentions as a lesson for the young. Furthermore, the reason many illustrations have been added is solely to ensure that children, who are always drawn to pictures, will not set the book aside. It is not intended for the perusal of learned gentlemen. ○ The inclusion within these volumes of accounts of disasters from the Bunsei and Tenpō eras, while deviating somewhat from the intended scope of "Observations of the Ansei Era," was done incidentally to record these events and make known the affairs of recent times. Similarly, the inclusion of even older events follows the same intent throughout. *A further note from the author* --- ## Ansei Kenbunroku, Volume One ### ○ On the Nature of Earthquakes The earth has cavities running in all directions that connect with one another. It is said to resemble, for example, a beehive, or the gills on the underside of a mushroom cap. Within these cavities, the energies (ki) of water and fire lie dormant. When the fire energy attempts to expand and extend itself, it is suppressed by the water energy and cannot do so — much like a muscle cramp in a human leg. At this moment, the fire energy, being yang and therefore strong, breaks through the yin of the water energy and erupts outward. This is what causes the great earth to tremble and shake. The same principle, when it occurs in the heavens, is equivalent to thunder and lightning. By this reasoning, in places such as the Arctic region, where it is extremely cold and heat cannot be generated, and similarly at the equator, where the force of the sun overcomes and dissipates the energies easily, allowing them to settle, earthquakes are each comparatively rare. In temperate regions with many rocks, cavities exist underground into which hot air rushes; when the contraction caused by cold air reaches its extreme, the earth shakes greatly. In the most severe cases, the ground splits open, mountains collapse, and rivers flow in reverse.
