現代語訳
昔々、いずれの国にかあったであろうか。
山川屋桃右衛門という商人がいた。
この桃右衛門は年が四十を過ぎても一人の子もないことを嘆いて暮らしていた。その妻がある日、洗濯川という川のほとりを通りかかって、川上から桃が流れてきたのを見つけて拾い取ってみると、一つの茎に桃の実が二つなっているものであった。もう一つ流れてこいというまでもなく、宿へ持ち帰って夫婦ともにこの桃を食べてみると、一つの桃は味わいが甘く、一つの桃は味わいが苦い。夫婦はこれを食べて、一つの茎に二つの実がなるだけでなく、このように味わいが違うことは奇妙なことだと不思議に思った。
【桃右衛門の台詞】
「それは昔話のようなことじゃのう。この寒中に桃がなるとは奇妙なこと。おおかた西王母の取り落とされた桃であろうよ。」
【妻の台詞】
「今日このような珍しい桃を拾いました。一つの茎に二つ実がなっております。」
英語訳
Long, long ago, in some country or other, there lived a merchant called Yamagawaya Momoremon (Peach Right Guard). This Momoremon was over forty years old but had no children, and he spent his days lamenting this fact. One day his wife was passing by the banks of a river called Sentaku River when she spotted a peach floating downstream. She picked it up and found that it was a single stem bearing two peach fruits. Without waiting for another to float by, she took it home, and when the couple ate this peach together, they found that one peach was sweet in flavor while the other was bitter. After eating them, the couple thought it strange that not only did two fruits grow on one stem, but that their flavors were so different—truly a mysterious thing.

"That's like something from an old tale! For peaches to ripen in this cold season is indeed strange. Most likely it's a peach dropped by the Queen Mother of the West."
【Wife's dialogue】
"Today I picked up such an unusual peach. Two fruits have grown on a single stem."
