...spanning more than 1,200 town blocks, amid these repeated tragic events: the Kishū Domain's warehouse estate had not burned in previous fires, and so the townspeople in the nearby area had been carrying their belongings there, or sending their elderly and children to take refuge at the estate, feeling reassured. However, the fire grew ever more intense and began burning from the northern storehouse.
No sooner had the flames broken out from thirty-six storehouses than men and women, young and old, were engulfed in smoke and lost, and the number of people who burned to death on the spot was beyond counting. Furthermore, when the residence of Matsudaira Echizen-no-kami was ablaze, just as his wife (the lady of the inner chambers) was attempting to evacuate, the flames spread wildly and the scene was so terrible that even the townspeople could barely look upon it — and thus it was exceedingly difficult for her to make her escape.
