現代語訳
そもそも化け物というものは昼に出ることができず、夜ばかりに出る、極めて弱い者である。しかしながら、これまでの草双紙などに包まれているのを見ると、ただ化けて人を驚かすばかりで、化け物どもは自分たちの身内での優劣の位が分からない。これによって、この度その身の化けの功績によって、上々吉、上々、または白吉、あるいは黒の上ばかりなどと、褒美の階級を与えよう。よって随分化けの稽古に励むべしと、化け物の頭たる狐太郎、狸次郎に申し渡す。

それがし身不詳ながら、当年化け物の座頭となったからには、皆々芸を励み見習われよ。

英語訳
Now then, monsters are creatures that cannot appear during the day, only emerging at night—they are extremely weak beings. However, looking at what has been depicted in kusazōshi (illustrated storybooks) up until now, they merely transform to frighten people, and these monsters do not understand the hierarchy of superiority among their own kind. Therefore, based on their individual achievements in transformation, we shall bestow ranks of reward such as "Highly Excellent," "Excellent," "White Good," or "Black Superior," and so forth. Hence, they should diligently practice their transformations. This is proclaimed to Kitsune Tarō and Tanuki Jirō, who serve as leaders of the monsters.
