[December 15th of the preceding month:] A directive was received from Lord Shimonosuke-no-kami stating that, with regard to the establishment of coastal defense battery installations (*daiba*) at various coastal points and all other related matters, things were to be carried out in accordance with the intentions that had previously been declared. One item: In the ninth month of the same year, concerning the allocation of personnel for the defense of the battery installations in Sōshū (Sagami Province), there had been difficulties in conducting a thorough investigation, as Aizu was far removed from the site and conditions there were not well understood. However, since [the subject retainer] had once again visited and inspected the site and now understood the circumstances in detail, he was ordered to return to Aizu promptly—despite the inconvenience—so as to report the findings of this investigation and to complete the assigned duty. One item: In the same month, [the retainer] was summoned to the lord's private chamber (*o-kyūsoku*). As he was being dispatched back to Aizu so soon after returning from his re-inspection of the Sōshū battery installations, he was presented with a formal written notice stating that an *o-haori* (formal surcoat) would be bestowed upon him, along with one bolt of *habutae* (fine silk) and cotton wadding, which were personally handed to him by the lord. One item: On the eighteenth day of the same month, he departed from Edo and traveled down to Aizu, where he carried out duties related to coastal defense. One item: In the tenth month of the same year, he was dispatched to Sōshū (Sagami Province), where he was ordered to serve as *ban-gashira* (troop captain) and concurrently assume the role of Military Affairs Magistrate (*gunjī bugyō*). He was to take primary charge of defense-related matters and, exercising authority in the manner of a senior magistrate, he was to issue appropriate instructions to local officials—including the district magistrate (*kōri bugyō*), the construction magistrate (*ofushin-kata*), the accounts magistrate (*okanjō-kata*), and all other administrative officials under civil jurisdiction—concerning the relevant duties. Furthermore, he was instructed to consider his posting as a one-year assignment and to be stationed at Kannonzaki.
