英語訳

(Continued from previous page) ...[having] devoted himself wholeheartedly and served diligently at [this] busy and demanding posting for several years, [he] was, by special dispensation, appointed to the rank of Junior Elder (*wakadoshiyori-kaku*), and was appointed to serve as a hired principal among the permanent-duty chamberlains (*tsune-zume go-yōnin shuyaku o-yatoi-kin*). Regarding supplementary advisory duties (*go-hosa suji*), it was proclaimed that he was to serve in the capacity of second-duty supplementary advisor (*go-hosa ni-ban-kin*). In the *o-tsugi* antechamber, [the use of] standards (*matoi*) and horse insignia (*uma-jirushi*), and in Aizu, the use of a palanquin (*norimono*), were all permitted to continue as before; stipend at the level of Junior Elder (*wakadoshiyori-narai dōshin-ryō*) was granted; [he] was exempted from co-signing official correspondence (*renmei kajō*); and [he] was excused (*go-yōsha*) from participating in the selection of various posts (*shoyaku-sen*). Furthermore, it was proclaimed that, until matters concerning the coastal battery defense preparations (*daiba go-sonaé*) and military affairs duties (*go-gunji go-yō*) had settled into a regular routine (*go-shiki ni naru made*), [he] was to consider himself the officer in charge on a temporary basis, and that not only was he to conduct investigations and inquiries as a matter of course, but he should also not hesitate to submit his own opinions and proposals (*zonjiyori*). Item: In the eleventh month of the same year, the upper residence (*uké-yashiki*) of Nagasaka Heidae was granted to [him]. Item: In the twelfth month of the same year, regarding his service as second-duty supplementary advisor: when attending upon [His Lordship] at destinations away from the castle, it was proclaimed that he should exercise direction and oversight over all matters as appropriate — not only over the retainers serving as escorts, but also over any official business that arose at such destinations. He was also to concurrently oversee matters pertaining to Lady Juhōin (*Juhōin-sama*), and when the chamberlain (*go-yōnin*) was not in attendance, he was to manage affairs so that no impediment to her service arose. It was further proclaimed that he need not serve as personal attendant (*o-kaésoé*) or escort to the Lord. Item: In the first month of the same ninth year, the year of the Monkey [Ansei 3, 1856], [he] was relieved of his appointment as instructor in military science (*heigaku shihan*). In recognition of his diligent service despite the abundance of official duties up to that time, it was proclaimed that he was granted a bolt of silk (*kinu ippiki*) with cotton added, in lieu of a kosode robe (*o-kosode no daé*). Item: On the thirteenth day of the third month of the same year, in the presence of [His Lordship], official business concerning the Sagami Province coastal battery (*Sōshū daiba ikken*)...
