(Continued from previous page) ...it was also seen that [his absence] would cause impediments to official duties, and also in preparation for unexpected urgent matters that might arise in neighboring territories, he was appointed to this as his primary duty, with oversight of Aizu domain administrative affairs additionally assigned to him. Since the Sagami Province coastal battery (*Sōshū daiba*) had become his domain's responsibility (*o-mochimae*), military affairs duties (*go-gunji go-yō*) were of the utmost importance; accordingly, he was kept on in concurrent capacity as Military Affairs Magistrate (*go-gunji bugyō*) in Edo, with his *yoriki* and *ashigaru* retainers remaining attached to him as before. Furthermore, since construction and engineering matters (*fushin no gi*) pertaining to said battery were exclusively the responsibility of the Military Affairs Magistrate — it being a duty assigned to him as the designated officer from the outset — there were matters in which referring every detail to Aizu through inter-office communications would render it impossible to discharge official duties efficiently. Recognizing also that military preparedness organization (*o-sonaé-gumi*) differed between Edo and Aizu, it was proclaimed that, while major matters of military administration policy (*go-gunsei-suji*) were a separate consideration, all other matters should be handled as heretofore according to established procedure.
Item: In the same month, there being an accumulation of gifted garments (*o-meshimono*) from His Lordship, [he] was granted lined formal upper and lower garments (*o-kamishimo*) and a summer hemp robe (*o-katabira*).
Item: On the eighteenth day of the tenth month of the same year, there being official business requiring attention, [he] was ordered to depart for Edo with the intention of arriving on the twenty-second day. It was further proclaimed that, until said official business was concluded, Harada Matasuke was to remain at Kannonzaki and attend to affairs in Sagami Province in the same manner as [the subject of this record] had been doing.
Item: On the twentieth day of the same month, [he] handed over his official duties to Harada Matasuke (*mōshitsuzuke*), departed from Kannonzaki, and arrived in Edo on the twenty-second day of the same month.
Item: On the twenty-third day of the same month, in the presence of [His Lordship], [an audience was held acknowledging that] for several years [he] had devoted his heart to [this] busy and demanding posting... (continues on the next page)
