They frequently sent barrels of sake and side dishes, and Lord Denjuro also sent gifts from time to time, not only during training sessions but similarly at other times. In addition, sake was sent from Osaka and other places, showing how much care we received. Regarding Karafuto (Sakhalin), it is a remote and cold land near 50 degrees north latitude. Even in midsummer, fog covers the entire area from around 10 AM in the morning until around 3 PM in the evening, with few clear days. Snow falls frequently until mid-May, and even at the end of May, ice can be found 5 to 7 inches below the surface. It is such a place where one cannot wear light summer clothing even during the hottest period of summer (doyo). To prevent illness, fires for heating were kept burning throughout the night without fail. Regarding drinking alcohol, there were instructions from the magistrates, and to avoid dampness-related ailments and maintain robust health for service, the military prohibition was relaxed, and those who wished were given one go (about 180ml) of sake every other day. From the end of the intercalary sixth month, patients with syphilis increased daily, and as the weather turned colder, sake was distributed daily upon request. All the senior officials worked together and exhausted every effort to ensure everyone remained healthy and fit for service. First, on the 25th day of the intercalary sixth month of the same year, Lord Yamaka Denjuro said: "The season is already quite late, so consider the duties at this location finished for now. From early next month, we will depart in two or three groups, waiting for favorable winds. The later groups will face delayed timing and will have to cross via Soya, requiring a long overland journey, so please understand that we plan to have as few people as possible in the later groups. However, if foreign enemies appear in the future..."
