One entry: In December of the same year [Bunka 4, 1807], the retainers were dispatched to Ezo (Hokkaido), where they commenced travel by both sea and land routes. Having labored diligently at that location for several days, the mission was completed without any delays. All members returned to their posts. His Lordship expressed great satisfaction with this outcome, and a formal announcement was made to this effect; a banquet was hosted in their honor at the castle. One entry: During the same month, the duty magistrate (*goyōban*) Lord Aoyama Shimonosuke summoned the castle liaison officers (*okikiban*) and issued written orders to the following individuals — Naitō Gensuke, Kitahara Uneme, Niwa Orinojō, Kajiwara Hyōma, Hyūga Saburōemon, and Miyake Magobee Yoshiaki — instructing them to present themselves at the castle at 9:00 a.m. (five-and-a-half bells), or, if absent from the city, to send a proxy (*nadai*) in their place. Accordingly, each sent a proxy, who was guided by the castle liaison officer to the castle at the appointed time. As the Hinoki Chamber was reportedly occupied, Lord Shimonosuke received them in the Yanagi Chamber. The proxies were summoned together and informed that, in recognition of their service in traveling to the distant frontier of Ezo to provide security (*keigo*), they would receive gifts (*haiōmono*) from the domain. The proxy of the unit commander (*monogashira*), Andō Shinkurō, received three formal robes (*ojifuku*). With the facilitation of the castle chamberlains (*sōjaban*) Lord Matsudaira Ukon-shōgen and Lord Naitō Buzen-no-kami, the party expressed their gratitude and withdrew. They then proceeded to pay their respects to the senior and junior lords (*gorōjaku-sama*) of the two citadels, and also paid courtesy calls to the chamberlains who had assisted them. This report arrived from Edo, and was acknowledged on the twentieth of the same month. One entry: On the fifteenth day of the eighth month of Bunka 6 [1809], the Year of the Snake, in the presence of His Lordship, it was recognized that since the year before last, great efforts had been made in conducting extensive investigations, and that distinguished service had been rendered in the affairs of Ezo...
