夫天地の変動（へん どう）は陰陽（いん よう）の剛（がう）柔（じゆ）によつて生ずる処也或は雲（くも）を起して雨を
ふらし風を生して雷（らい）を発（はつ）す是みな人身に疾病（やまい）を生ずるが如し嗚呼（あゝ）天成哉

## 安政息災記
そもそも天地の変動は、陰陽の剛柔によって生じるものである。あるいは雲を起こして雨を降らし、風を生じさせて雷を発する。これはみな、人の身体に疾病が生じるのと同じようなものである。ああ、天の成すことよ、命の成すことよ。
時に安政二年（卯年）十月二日、夜の四つ時（午後十時頃）に、突然大地が震動し、大地震が起きた。鉄壁のような土蔵や人家をことごとく瞬く間に揺り崩し、その死亡者の数は数え切れないほどであった。哀れで、はかないことである。
まず北の方では、千住宿が大きく揺り崩れた。小塚原は地震の上に火事が起こり、残らず焼失した。新吉原は大半が揺り崩れ、少しは残ったものの、京町一丁目・同二丁目より出火し、また角町・揚屋町・江戸町一丁目・二丁目ともに所々から火が出て、残らず焼失した。遊女その他の死亡者は数知れず。もっとも、江戸町一丁目の角三軒は残り、京町一丁目の片角六・七軒が残り、五十間（道の）西側は半分ほど残った。
それより土手下・田町・竹門・南北馬道・猿若町一丁目・二丁目・三丁目は残らず焼失した。楽屋新道は片側が残った。また田中より山谷・浅草町・新鳥越・芝馬場・今戸はおびただしく倒壊し、往来は山のようになって通行が難しくなった。死亡者は特に多かった。また大音寺前・三ノ輪・金杉・板橋（板本）は大いに倒壊し、根岸は少々崩れた。それより丹保・幸龍寺辺りが大いに崩れた。六郷様のお屋敷は少々損じた。また聖天町・山の宿・花川戸この辺りはおびただしく崩れた。
金龍山浅草寺は本堂は無事であったが、五重の塔は少々損じた。また並木通り・材木町・広小路・田原町・仲町この辺りは少々損じた。森下加藤遠江守様のお下屋敷は大いに倒壊した。また駒形より出火して、諏訪町・黒船町・三好町・河岸通りまで焼失した。三好町の角で一番組の消防隊が食い止めた。それより御蔵前通りは少々損じ、東御門跡は無事であったが、唐門が崩れた。また下谷・広徳寺前の寺院・町家は大いに崩れた。その中に無事な所も

## Record of Disaster Avoidance during the Ansei Era
The upheavals of heaven and earth arise from the interplay of the firm and the yielding aspects of yin and yang. At times, clouds form and rain falls; winds arise and thunder roars. All of these are akin to diseases arising in the human body. Alas — such is the work of Heaven, such is the work of Fate!
In the second year of Ansei (the Year of the Hare), on the night of the 2nd day of the 10th month, at the Hour of the Pig (around 10 o'clock at night), the earth suddenly shook violently in a great earthquake. Earthen storehouses and residences, sturdy as iron fortresses, were toppled in an instant without exception, and the number of dead was beyond counting. It was a pitiful and fleeting tragedy.
To the north, Senju-juku suffered great devastation. Kozukahara, struck first by the earthquake and then by fire, was completely destroyed. Shin-Yoshiwara was largely destroyed by the tremors; though a small portion remained standing, fires broke out in Kyōmachi 1-chōme and 2-chōme, and then spread from various points in Kadochō, Ageyachō, Edochō 1-chōme and 2-chōme, consuming everything. The number of courtesans and others who perished was beyond counting. However, three houses at the corner of Edochō 1-chōme survived, six or seven houses at a corner of Kyōmachi 1-chōme remained, and about half of the western side of the fifty-ken road survived.
From there, Doteshita, Tamamachi, Takemon, the north and south Umamichi, and Saruwakachō 1-chōme, 2-chōme, and 3-chōme were all completely destroyed by fire. One side of Gakuya Shindō remained. From Tanaka, the areas of Sanya, Asakusachō, Shin-Tokoshi, Shibababa, and Imado suffered massive collapses; the roads became like mountains of rubble, making passage nearly impossible, with an especially high number of fatalities. Daiōnji-mae, Minowa, Kanasugi, and Itahon (Itabashi) also suffered severe collapses, while Negishi sustained minor damage. From there, Tambo and the area around Kōryūji suffered great destruction. The estate of Lord Rokugō sustained minor damage. The areas of Shōtenchō, Yamano-shuku, and Hanakawado suffered particularly severe collapses.
The main hall of Kinryūzan Sensōji (Asakusa Temple) escaped unharmed, but the five-storied pagoda sustained minor damage. The areas along Namiki-dōri, Zaimokuchō, Hirokōji, Tawarachō, and Nakachō sustained minor damage. The lower estate of Lord Katō, Governor of Tōtōmi, at Morishita, suffered severe collapse. A fire broke out in Komagata and burned through Suwachō, Kurofunechō, Miyoshichō, and along the riverside. The fire was stopped at the corner of Miyoshichō by the First Fire Brigade. From there, Okuramaedōri sustained minor damage; the East Gate precinct (Higashi-Gomon) was unharmed, but the Chinese-style gate (Karaemon) collapsed.
