Wind cotton around the end of a chopstick-like implement, dip it in the medicine, and rub it onto the necrotic (dead) flesh of the affected area. Then wipe away the corrupted blood with a piece of soft cloth, and sprinkle the aforementioned medicine over it. If this medicine proves ineffective, add half a *ryō* (unit of weight) of *teifun* (white face powder; sold at medicine shops under the name *tō no tsuchi*, "Chinese clay"), grind it together, and apply in the same manner as the preceding formula.
**〖Internal Medicine〗** Slice and decoct *daio* (rhubarb root), *seitai* (indigo naturalis), and *kanjio* (dried rehmannia root) — all three of these ingredients are available at medicine shops — and take as a drink. Alternatively, grinding them into a powder and dissolving in hot water is also effective.

The *Kōkei Saikyū Zenpō* in three volumes comprises a total of ten categories and eighty-six sections. Each section opens with the presentation of symptoms, followed by the relevant formulas, and the appearances of medicinal plants as well as the acupoints for moxibustion are illustrated with diagrams. Compiled herein are, as comprehensively as possible, methods that are supremely simple and convenient — enabling one to rescue those in critical danger and relieve those in acute suffering in an instant — for use in cases of sudden rashes, apoplexy, and other emergencies where life and death are decided in a single breath and there is no time to summon a physician or obtain medicines.
This is the fruit of what my late father (*kakigen*, "revered late father") devoted several decades to — immersing his mind, refining his study, inquiring widely, collecting extensively, and verifying through repeated experience. It is not to be compared with the works of such men as Zhao Jifu, Ou Shihai, and Hu Qizhong, which merely gathered together prescriptions already established by earlier practitioners.
Should this book be distributed throughout the land — in cities and villages alike, illuminating every household — and kept in readiness for sudden, unforeseen emergencies at any hour of the day, it shall be hoped that untimely and wrongful deaths (*yōō*) may be prevented.
